GLEN ELDER, Kan. — Doug Palen, a fourthgeneration grain farmer on Kansas’
windswept plains, is in the business of understanding the climate. Since 2012, he
has choked through the harshest drought to hit the Great Plains in a century,
punctuated by freakish snowstorms and suffocating gales of dust. His planting
season starts earlier in the spring and pushes deeper into winter.
To adapt, he has embraced an environmentally conscious way of farming that
guards against soil erosion and conserves precious water. He can talk for hours
about carbon sequestration — the trapping of globalwarmingcausing gases in plant
life and in the soil — or the science of the beneficial microbes that enrich his land.
In short, he is a climate change realist. Just don’t expect him to utter the words
“climate change.”
“If politicians want to exhaust themselves debating the climate, that’s their
choice,” Mr. Palen said, walking through fields of freshly planted winter wheat. “I
have a farm to run.”
Here in northcentral Kansas, America’s breadbasket and conservative heartland,
the economic realities of agriculture make climate change a critical business issue. At
the same time, politics and social pressure make frank discussion complicated. This

up, the conservative orthodoxy maintains that the science isn’t settled.
So while climate change is part of daily conversation, it gets disguised as
something else.
“People are all talking about it, without talking about it,” said Miriam Horn, the
author of a recent book on conservative Americans and the environment, “Rancher,
Farmer, Fisherman.” “It’s become such a charged topic that there’s a navigation
people do.”
Mr. Palen — he plays his politics close to his vest but allows that he didn’t vote
for Hillary Clinton — and others here in Glen Elder and across the state illustrate the
delicate dance.
Farmers like him focus on practical issues like erosion or dwindling aquifers.

Climate Change and Destruction of Natural Resources
Indeed, a problem exists in the world, and it is posing a great threat to human life. Natural resources are down by at least 60% and what is left is also under attack, the climatic conditions are worsening by the day. It is a problem that is universal and affecting every part of the world. Climate change refers to the global or regional climate patterns which changed in the mid and late 20th century due to various factors such as increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere produced largely by use of fossil fuels (Costanza 36). Climate change is causing more harm than good from farming to other business that depends on natural resources for their establishment, these funds are being destroyed by human beings for personal gains without caring about the adverse effects the destruction has on the universe.
History, overview, and Status
Climate change was experienced in the late 20th century, and it has grown tremendously ever since. The climate patterns currently are unpredictable, and no one can rely on what they thought were the patterns previously. Climate change is a problem that is directly affecting natural resources where currently trees bud in the spring, lakes freeze and thaw while extreme events that affect large water masses are caused by changing temperatures and precipitations (Le Billon 25). Some animal species have died and are become distinct due to the problem while others are migrating to a new location in search of food sources and breeding zones. It has been reported that cases of diseases and pests outbreak in the forests have increased in the 21st century compared to years ago. Effects are more than normal since every sector is affected including the fish and aquatic life, wildlife, wetlands, drylands as well, parks and other reserved areas, water bodies and plants among others.
Economic Problems Invited by Climatic Changes
The international community has tried a lot to deal constructively with the problem of countering climate change over the past two decades. Climate change is the preeminent global crisis of our time, and through various measures and policies have been put in place, minimal positive growth is recorded. With the many articles, comprehensive reviews, and intensive research, a conclusion drawn from them is that the costs and benefits of mitigating climate change in the next five decades are uncertain (Le Billon 64). So far a lot of money has been spent by the government and non-governmental organizations to save up the world from issues to brought about by climate chang.

In many ways, social media platforms have created great benefits for our societies by expanding and diversifying the ways people communicate with each other, and yet these platforms also have the power to cause harm. Posting hurtful messages about other people is a form of harassment known as cyberbullying. Some acts of cyberbullying may not only be considered slanderous, but also lead to serious consequences. In 2010, Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi jumped to his death a few days after his roommate used a webcam to observe and tweet about Tyler’s sexual encounter with another man. Jane Clementi, Tyler’s mother, stated, “In this digital world, we need to teach our youngsters that their actions have consequences, that their words have real power to hurt or to help. They must be encouraged to choose to build people up and not tear them down.”
In 2013, Idalia Hernández Ramos, a middle school teacher in Mexico, was a victim of cyber harassment. After discovering that one of her students tweeted that the teacher was a “bitch” and a “whore,” Hernández confronted the girl during a lesson on social media etiquette. Inquiring why the girl would post such hurtful messages that could harm the teacher’s reputation, the student meekly replied that she was upset at the time. The teacher responded that she was very upset by the student’s actions. As a 17 year veteran of the police department, he was valued and admired for his unyielding care for the community. Charlie Upton gained acclaim for his heavy involvement in youth activities. He coached the boys pee-wee football team to victory in back to back seasons. He was known to get passionate about a bad call by referees. Coach Upton cared so much for his team, he generously offered to reward the team with a trip to Disney World. The man was even President of the local school board at one time. The highlight of the Christmas season was when he would dress up as a convincing Santa Claus for all of Summit’s children and visit the elementary schools.

Primarily Village Administrator Tim Bell, whose son was star quarterback of Upton’s pee-wee team, and his own boss Police Chief Martin Owens. It was safe to say, nobody was expecting the coming scandal that would forever shake the community of Summit.
When Chief Martin Owens first heard the news, he decided to run straight to Administrator Tim Bell for direction. Highly unsettled, together they came up with a plan to combat the coming storm.

Chief Owens and Administrator Bell called Charlie Upton into the Chief’s office and demanded an explanation to the allegations brought against him. A 12 year old boy who was being treated by a social worker for emotional problems, claimed that he had been sexual molested by none other than the Department’s beloved Charlie Upton.
When confronted with the accusations Upton replied simply, “well, there goes 17 years of police work down the drain.” Taking Upton’s non-denial as admission of guilt, Bell furiously demands he surrenders his badge and places him on unpaid leave on the spot. An outside agency would handle a 3 week investigation into the charges and in the meantime nobody outside of those three parties would know why Charlie Upton was being investigated.

The investigation was completed and Upton was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was immediately terminated. Against legal advice Administrator Bell refused to pay Upton’s separation pay of $26,000 in unused vacation time and sick leave.
From that point, the Village of Summit turned into a political circus:

Climate change was experienced in the late 20th century, and it has grown tremendously ever since. The climate patterns currently are unpredictable, and no one can rely on what they thought were the patterns previously. Cyber Harassment
In many ways, social media platforms have created great benefits for our societies by expanding and diversifying the ways people communicate with each other, and yet these platforms also have the power to cause harm. Posting hurtful messages about other people is a form of harassment known as cyberbullying. Some acts of cyberbullying may not only be considered slanderous, but also lead to serious consequences. In 2010, Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi jumped to his death a few days after his roommate used a webcam to observe and tweet about Tyler’s sexual encounter with another man. Jane Clementi, Tyler’s mother, stated, “In this digital world, we need to teach our youngsters that their actions have consequences, that their words have real power to hurt or to help. They must be encouraged to choose to build people up and not tear them down.”
In 2013, Idalia Hernández Ramos, a middle school teacher in Mexico, was a victim of cyber harassment. After discovering that one of her students tweeted that the teacher was a “bitch” and a “whore,” Hernández confronted the girl during a lesson on social media etiquette. Inquiring why the girl would post such hurtful messages that could harm the teacher’s reputation, the student meekly replied that she was upset at the time. The teacher responded that she was very upset by the student’s actions. Demanding a public apology in front of the class, Hernández stated that she would not allow “young brats” to call her those names. Hernández uploaded a video of this confrontation online, attracting much attention.

Charlie Upton was the most beloved citizen of the close knit village of Summit. Everyone knew and respected Charlie. As a 17 year veteran of the police department, he was valued and admired for his unyielding care for the community. Charlie Upton gained acclaim for his heavy involvement in youth activities. He coached the boys pee-wee football team to victory in back to back seasons. He was known to get passionate about a bad call by referees. Coach Upton cared so much for his team, he generously offered to reward the team with a trip to Disney World. The man was even President of the local school board at one time. The highlight of the Christmas season was when he would dress up as a convincing Santa Claus for all of Summit’s children and visit the elementary schools.

Charlie Upton’s popularity within Summit was unparalleled. Upton was known to rub shoulders with the Village’s elite. Primarily Village Administrator Tim Bell, whose son was star quarterback of Upton’s pee-wee team, and his own boss Police Chief Martin Owens. It was safe to say, nobody was expecting the coming scandal that would forever shake the community of Summit.
When Chief Martin Owens first heard the news, he decided to run straight to Administrator Tim Bell for direction. Highly unsettled, together they came up with a plan to combat the coming storm.

Chief Owens and Administrator Bell called Charlie Upton into the Chief’s office and demanded an explanation to the allegations brought against him. A 12 year old boy who was being treated by a social worker for emotional problems, claimed that he had been sexual molested by none other than the Department’s beloved Charlie Upton.
When confronted with the accusations Upton replied simply, “well, there goes 17 years of police work down the drain.” Taking Upton’s non-denial as admission of guilt, Bell furiously demands he surrenders his badge and places him on unpaid leave on the spot. An outside agency would handle a 3 week investigation into the charges and in the meantime nobody outside of those three parties would know why Charlie Upton was being investigated.

BP & the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
The reason that the authors selected to evaluate British Petroleum (BP) for a case study was due in no small part to the endless media attention given to the oil spill in the Gulf. BP is an extremely popular brand that everyone in this country undoubtedly is effected by in one way or another. One of the initial reasons for choosing BP was the unmitigated disaster put forth on the public relations front in explaining the company’s efforts at dealing with the Gulf of Mexico oil crisis. The authors were further intrigued at this assignment for the poor leadership and decision making acumen of the former CEO Tony Hayward (CMU, 2009, p. 227). With this multi-focal approach, the study will highlight the conflicting messaging presented to the public and the lackluster and ultimately ineffective leadership within the organization.
BP is a huge multinational conglomerate whose primary focus is the petroleum industry. The company does business in over 30 countries around the globe. Its annual operating income is $239 billion dollars with over $14 billion dollars in profit in the year 2009. The company employs over 80,300 individuals and owns 16 refineries worldwide. BP operates several subsidiaries under the names AM/PM markets, BP and ARCO gas stations, Aral gas stations in Germany, Wild Bean Café, and Castrol Motor Oil (BP at a glance, 2010).
The competition within the petroleum industry is not as plentiful as one might think. There are actually very few players in the game. Due to the limited number of refiners of crude in this country the oil from various sources are blended prior to coming to the consumer. BP doesn’t have much use for the service station business anymore. In 2007, it announced plans to sell the last 700 stations that it hadn’t already sold to franchisees. The company chose to focus on finding and collecting oil. Once companies make a discovery, it comes out of the ground and ends up at a refinery. There, it can be mixed with oil that a variety of companies have poured into the tanks. This is further evidenced by BP’s plans to divest itself of its remaining 700 gas service stations. The highest percentage of income is made from oil exploration and extraction and not in the selling of gasoline at its stations (Lieber, 2010).

Case Study 8.1: Team Denial
Emory University Holocaust studies professor Deborah Lipstadt faced an uphill battle when she was sued by British amateur historian David Irving in 1995. Irving was the world’s best known Holocaust denier. He claimed that Hitler didn’t order the killing of Jews. Instead, the Führer’s subordinates acted on their own, without his knowledge. Irving’s most audacious assertion was that no Jews and other victims were gassed at the Auschwitz concentration camp. He denied that there were gas chambers. Instead, deaths were caused by typhus and other illnesses, not murder. Speaking before neo-Nazi groups, Irving declared that more people died in the back of Senator Edward Kennedy’s car (one young woman) than were deliberately killed at Auschwitz.
In her book Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, professor Lipstadt called Irving “a Hitler partisan wearing blinkers” who distorted historical evidence to “reach historically untenable conclusions.”1 Irving then threatened to sue unless she retracted her comments. He likely thought she would settle out of court. Not Lipstadt. Surrender would give deniers a victory, meaning a “second death” to the victims of Auschwitz and other Jews who perished under the Nazis. But Irving had the upper hand. Under British law, Lipstadt had to defend herself from the allegations. (In the United States, accusers have to prove that they have been libeled and defamed.) The lengthy court case would cost over a million dollars to fight and would be held in London, thousands of miles from Atlanta, where Lipstadt taught.
Fortunately for Dr. Lipstadt, others rallied to her cause. Emory gave her financial support and paid leave while hiring adjuncts to teach her classes. (School officials believed that canceling Holocaust courses would be a victory for Irving.) Penguin, her publisher, provided legal and financial support and Jewish groups raised money for her defense. Most important, she gained the support of a top-notch legal team who believed in her cause. This team included (1) those who prepared her case—a team of researchers who gathered information and the attorneys who assembled court documents; and (2) a pair of barristers who argued in front of the judge. (In Britain, one set of attorneys prepares the case while a different set of attorneys presents the case in court.) Lipstadt needed all the help she could get. Preparation for the trial took five years. Researchers had to sift through thousands of documents checking footnotes as well as hundreds of Irving’s personal diaries. They generated an eight-foot-tall stack of trial notebooks.
The legal team decided to put Irving on trial, demonstrating how he systematically altered historical evidence to support his anti-Semitic views. That meant that Deborah wouldn’t testify, turning her into a spectator at her own trial. Lipstadt, a skilled public speaker, objected to these restrictions but eventually gave in. She said, “Being q.

About the Company
DocSystems Billing, Inc., processes insurance billing paperwork for a network of small health care clinics throughout the United States. Privately owned physician practices, as well as specialists such as cardiologists and physical therapists, contract with DocSystems to process the billing paperwork through the maze of health care insurance companies and networks. DocSystems charges either a flat fee for each bill it processes or a percentage of the total, depending on the contract with the provider.
About the Call Center
Forty full-time employees work at the onsite call center: 30 Medical Insurance Specialists (who handle cases of moderate complexity) and 10 Senior Insurance Consultants (who handle very complex cases). The senior consultants have usually worked up through the ranks, often first working on basic billing, then as medical insurance specialists. Most of them have a long tenure with DocSystems, ranging from 17 to 23 years.
An additional 100 employees (called Billing Specialists) work at an outsourced call center. DocSystems contracts out the initial processing of claims and basic computer input. The contract employees used to work at DocSystems until the outsourcing.

The call center was outsourced a year ago to another organization. Almost all of the former DocSystems employees were offered jobs with the new company, but the pay and benefits were not comparable. Word has spread to the former colleagues who remain at DocSystems that the outsourcing company treats its employees poorly.
Call Center Reorganization
The remaining group of 40 employees was reorganized into two new teams about 3 months ago. Initially, there had been two managers—Alex managed the senior insurance consultants, and Dana managed the medical insurance specialists. Both reported to Jim, the senior director. In the new structure, Alex and Dana both manage 20 employees, with each managing half of the specialists and half of the consultants.
That meant that some of each group remained with their former manager, while some moved to a new manager. Senior management hoped that the integrated teams would start to share knowledge between more senior and more junior practitioners.

Case Study 5.2: Hiding the Real Story at Midwestern Community Action
Recently, life at Midwestern Community Action has been anything but smooth. The nonprofit runs a variety of programs in a midsized city, including preschools, teen drop-in centers, a food pantry, a medical clinic, and low-income housing. Health problems forced founding executive director Sally May, who was well loved by staff, to quit after 20 years in her position. The board then appointed Josiah Lang, who had served as the manager of a local government service agency, as the next executive director.
When Lang arrived at Community Action, he discovered that May had been a hands-off leader. She allowed coordinators to run their programs without much supervision. Used to operating on their own, they resisted Lang’s efforts to institute performance evaluations, to evaluate the effectiveness of each program, and to reallocate funds between programs. It didn’t help that Lang made little effort to get to know his subordinates and has an abrasive personality. Three coordinators and a half dozen front-line staff quit. Lang has the support of the board, which believes that the organization needs more structure and accountability, but staff morale is low. Employees have lost faith in the organization’s leadership. However, they remain committed to helping the disadvantaged and to Community Action’s mission. For that reason, they largely keep their frustrations to themselves and are careful to protect the organization’s public image. Community Action continues to be well regarded by clients, government officials, donors, and the public at large.
This week Community Action will interview an applicant for its housing coordinator position, a vacancy created when the previous coordinator left in frustration. This is the most important open position to fill. The housing coordinator oversees three apartment complexes with 200 tenants and manages the most employees. Failure to fill the vacancy soon could reduce Community Action’s outreach to the homeless. The applicant, Albert Singh, appears to be highly qualified. If he takes the position, Singh will move his family from out of state. He has no idea that Community Action is dealing with significant conflict and poor morale.
Singh will make a brief presentation to the entire staff during his visit and then meet for an extended time with the current program coordinators. During this session, the coordinators (without the director present) will question him and present an overview of Community Action. Albert will also have an opportunity to ask questions of the coordinators.

Doug Palen, a fourth-generation grain farmer on Kansas’
wind-swept plains, is in the business of understanding the clima
te. Since 2012, he
has choked through the harshest drought to hit the Great Plains i
n a century,
punctuated by freakish snowstorms and suffocating gales of dust
. His planting
season starts earlier in the spring and pushes deeper into winter.
To adapt, he has embraced an environmentally conscious way of
farming that
guards against soil erosion and conserves precious water. He ca
n talk for hours
about carbon sequestration —
2. the trapping of global-warming-causing gases in plant
life and in the soil —
or the science of the beneficial microbes that enrich his land.
In short, he is a climate change realist. Just don’t expect him to
utter the words
“climate change.”
“If politicians want to exhaust themselves debating the climate,
that’s their
choice,” Mr. Palen said, walking through fields of freshly plante
d winter wheat. “I
have a farm to run.”
Here in north-central Kansas, America’s breadbasket and conser
vative heartland,
the economic realities of agriculture make climate change a criti
cal business issue. At
the same time, politics and social pressure make frank discussio

weather is acting
up, the conservative orthodoxy maintains that the science isn’t s
ettled.
So while climate change is part of daily conversation, it gets dis
guised as
something else.
“People are all talking about it, without talking about it,” said
Miriam Horn, the
author of a recent book on conservative Americans and the envir
onment, “Rancher,
Farmer, Fisherman.” “It’s become such a charged topic that ther
e’s a navigation
people do.”
Mr. Palen —
he plays his politics close to his vest but allows that he didn’t v
ote
for Hillary Clinton —
and others here in Glen Elder and across the state illustrate the
delicate dance.
Farmers like him focus on practical issues like erosion or dwind
ling aquifers.
“When you don’t get the rainfall, it’s tough times,” he said.
Regional politicians and business leaders speak of pursuing jobs
that clean
energy may create, rather than pressing the need to rein in carbo
n emissions. A
science teacher at a community college —
4. whose deeply religious students
sometimes express doubts about the trustworthiness of science t
hat contradicts
biblical teachings —
speaks to his class about the positives of scientific discovery
(electricity) in order to ease into more contentious subjects (glo
bal warming).
And an editor for a closely followed agriculture magazine, Succ
essful Farming,
recently made a controversial move, drawing a flurry of angry l
etters: He broke with
longstanding policy to address climate change head-on.
“Some readers thanked us,” the editor Gil Gullickson said. “But
some wondered
whether we’d been hijacked by avid environmentalists.”
The climate has not always been such a partisan issue. Richard
Nixon, a
Republican president, set up the Environmental Protection Agen
cy and signed the
Clean Air Act. Ronald Reagan ushered in the Montreal Protocol,
the first global
treaty to protect the global atmosphere.

Much of that consensus has broken down, in no small part becau
se of a well-
financed push by fossil-fuel interests, together with influential
Republican allies, to
attack well-established research on topics like global warming a
nd push back on
environmental regulation. That push began in earnest during the
George W. Bush
administration as attempts to undercut the Clean Air Act, and si
nce then, the divide
has widened.
President Trump has famously said he believes that climate cha
nge is a hoax
invented by the Chinese, and his administration has purged near
ly all mention of
climate-change programs from the White House and State Depar
tment websites. It
has also ordered a freeze on federal grant spending at the E.P.A.
and other
government agencies.
The fact that the climate-change discourse has also become dom
inated by
liberals has alienated some conservatives, including Mr. Palen.
Many people here in
particular resent how, in the polarized political landscape of rec
ent years,
conservative Americans have been painted as hostile to the envi
ronment.
The Trump campaign successfully seized on that schism, paintin
g Democrats as
6. overzealous environmentalists with little sympathy for the econ
omic realities or
social mores of rural America. “Many of our federal environmen
tal laws are being
used to oppress farmers instead of actually helping the environ
ment,” Mr. Trump
quipped in a widely circulated Q. and A. on FarmFutures.com. “
Farmers care more
for the environment than the radical environmentalists.”
Still, “it would be a huge mistake to think people voting for Tru
mp were voting
against the environment,” Ms. Horn said. If Trump follows an a
ggressive anti-
environment agenda, she said, “there will be a big backlash in t
he heartland.”
Defender of the Soil
In many ways, Mr. Palen sees himself as the ultimate conservati
onist. His great-
grandfather, the son of an immigrant from Luxembourg, was the
first to farm in this
stretch of north-central Kansas.

Mr. Palen grew up on the farm, took it over in his 20s, and look
ed to make his
mark. In college, he learned of a farming technique called “no ti
ll,” which is intended
to more closely mimic the natural prairie ecosystem, and was int
rigued by its
promise to protect his family fields from Kansas’ relentless win
ds and sudden
downpours. The idea behind no-till farming, he now explains to
anyone who will
listen, is that plowing the soil destroys its natural structure, cau
sing it to lose its
precious moisture and nutrients. That makes it vulnerable to ero
sion.
Mr. Palen’s fields aren’t tilled. There are no neat furrows. The r
esidue of plants
from previous plantings still carpets the earth, offering a layer o
f protection, and his
fields are never bare even after harvest. He alternates wheat and
other crops with
what he describes as a cocktail of grasses and leafy plants, like
grain sorghum,
sunflowers and alfalfa, a gesture toward the diversity of the wil
d prairie. “They say
there’s more organisms in a handful of soil than people on the p
lanet,” Mr. Palen
said, making his way through a field between plantings. He stoo
ped his tall frame
8. down, dug up a clump of earth, and rolled it between his fingers
. He is soft-spoken,
yet when he talks of the earth, his excitement is obvious.
“See how it’s firm and holds together?” he said. “See how it doe
sn’t break down
into goo?”
No-till farming addresses a dire problem facing American farme
rs: Almost 1.7
billion tons of topsoil are blown or washed off croplands a year,
according to the
Department of Agriculture, resulting in billions of dollars in los
ses for farmers.
Keeping the soil healthy and covered also reduces evaporation b
y 80 percent,
helping farmers conserve water, the department estimates.
Farmers like Mr. Palen also happen to be protecting a vast and v
aluable carbon
sink, making him an ally to climate-change campaigners. The so
il traps far more
carbon in its depths than all plant and animal life on the earth’s
surface, scientists
estimate. A 2013 study estimated that no-till and other restorati
ve farming methods
could achieve up to 15 percent of the total carbon reduction nee
ded to stabilize the
climate.
Despite his conservationist streak, Mr. Palen has no affinity for
environmentalists. He feels vilified, he says, for his continued u
se of chemical

herbicides and pesticides. (Some organic farmers control weeds
by tilling the soil,
which Mr. Palen argues causes more ecological harm.) And he r
emains suspicious of
any expansion of government regulations that ignore realities of
rural America.
“We want to be left alone,” Mr. Palen said. He singled out the C
lean Water Rule,
an E.P.A. regulation designed to protect streams and other water
ways, as regulatory
overreach. Washington types wanted to dictate what he could do
with every creek,
every puddle, on his farm, he said, putting impossible burdens o
n farmers.
And most of them had probably never spent any time on a farm,
he said. “We’re
the ones working to protect the environment. We’re the ones wh
ose lives are tied to
the earth.”
Honing Scientific Strategy
10. Carl Priesendorf, a science teacher at Metropolitan Community
College in
Kansas City, Mo., has learned strategies to talk about climate ch
ange without
completely alienating climate skeptics. He teaches geology and
meteorology. Those
subjects would usually be innocuous, but not here.
“I’d show the CO2 data —
how we’d had the hottest year on record,” Mr.
Priesendorf said. “But I get students who basically say what I’m
teaching is
nonsense. My car’s been keyed. I get notes from students saying
they’re praying for
my soul.” One such note that he shared reads, “Know that God’s
love surpasses
knowledge.”
Since a particularly contentious debate in class —
a student threw a book bag at
him, he said —
Mr. Priesendorf has taken a step back to focus on the everyday
positives of science. “I ask: ‘Do you like the light bulb? Do you
like electricity?’ That’s
science,” he said. “Then I ease into more contentious topics, lik
e climate change.”
That is an uphill battle. A 2013 survey found that just 8 percent
of farmers in the
Midwest believed that “climate change is occurring, and it is ca
used mostly by
human activities.” An earlier Pew Research Center poll found th
at only 48 percent of
people in the Midwest agree with the statement that there is “sol

average temperature on earth has been getting warmer,” a numb
er below other
regions in the country.
And conservatives have been pushing back against classroom st
andards adopted
by the state of Kansas that treat evolution and climate change as
scientific concepts.
Last year, the United States Supreme Court declined to review a
nonprofit group’s
lawsuit that claimed that those standards promote atheism.
But now, under a Trump administration, Mr. Priesendorf felt sci
ence itself was
under fire. “If even your government starts telling your country
that scientists are
lying to you, it’ll be even tougher for science teachers,” he said.
“I’m going to focus
12. on keeping my students’ minds open to the possibility that the s
cience is correct.”
Lawmaker Forges Alliances
Annie Kuether, a Democrat and clean-energy advocate in the Re
publican-
controlled Statehouse and a member of the State Utilities Comm
ittee, has for years
pushed for more renewable energy. One obstacle, though, is that
the committee’s
chairman does not believe in climate change.
A St. Louis native who landed in Topeka as a young bride four
decades ago, Ms.
Kuether is used to working alongside adversaries. Her county vo
ted for Mr. Trump,
along with all but two counties in the state.
She has sat through committee meetings where climate skeptics,
including the
discredited scientist Wei-Hock Soon, blasted the science behind
global warming.
“Carbon Dioxide, CO2, is merely a bit player in climate change,
” reads one slide Mr.
Soon presented in 2013. “Rising CO2 is largely beneficial to pla
nt and human life.”
“I remember being horrified,” Ms. Kuether said.
Still, over the years, she has forged powerful business alliances
by focusing, in
her arguments, on jobs and the economy. She has also found inc
reasing support
from farmers and landowners who count on wind turbines and s
13. olar panels they
host on their property for income.

“Gradually, from a political standpoint, you can build a constitu
ency that
benefits from this industry,” said Mark Lawlor, one ally and an
executive at Clean
Line Energy Partners, which is building a 780-mile transmission
line to deliver
4,000 megawatts of wind power from western Kansas to Missou
ri, Illinois and other
neighboring states.
“Just like grain, cattle, airplanes, wind’s another valuable resou
rce Kansas can
export,” he said, referring to Kansas’ sizable agricultural indust
ry, as well as the
Cessna Aircraft Company, which is based in Wichita, Kan. “Kan
sas has a lot of
pragmatic folks here, and we recognize benefits.”
Kansas’ dwindling water sources have been another issue that M

found strikes a nerve among voters here, whatever their beliefs
on climate change.
That has helped to build some support for measures to save the
state’s shrinking
aquifers, a lifeline for communities in western Kansas, though n
ot yet any decisive
action.
In fact, her focus on the practical is a big part of what has kept
getting her
elected, she said, in a State Legislature where she is outnumbere
d by Republican
lawmakers, two to one. “I’ve always felt that families have alwa
ys been concerned
about water —
whether they’re Democratic, Republican or independent,” she s
aid.
Publication Takes a Stand
Mr. Gullickson of Successful Farming, who usually writes about
topics like
pigweed, gypsum and runoff, has started to push the envelope o
n debates over
climate change. An 11-year veteran of the magazine, where he i
s the crops technology
editor, Mr. Gullickson said he had long been on the fence about
climate change. But
that began changing five years ago, when he attended a worksho
p where a University
of Kentucky professor gave a convincing argument, backed by d
ata.
“I started looking at the evidence, at the data and what farmers
were doing,” he
15. said. “And it’s clear: The weather has become more extreme the
se days. And I
thought, ‘I’ve never heard of any successful business publicatio
n that stayed in
business by withholding information.’”

So for the first time in the storied magazine’s 115-year-old hist
ory, a cover story
squarely addressed the science of climate change. The October 2
014 piece was
published under the headline, “@#$*% Weather!”
“I know what you’re thinking: Climate change is just some figm
ent of Al Gore’s
imagination adopted by liberal tree-huggers who want to tank th
e U.S. economy,”
Mr. Gullickson wrote.
“Still, think back over some rough weather you’ve endured in re
cent years and
ask yourself these questions,” he continued. “Are springs gettin
g wetter? Are
droughts increasing in severity? Are rainstorms increasing in int
ensity?” The clear
answer, he said: “Yes.”
16. Mr. Gullickson said that he and his editor had held lengthy disc
ussions leading
up to the article’s publication. His editor in chief, Dave Kurns,
was supportive, he
said, but also warned that the piece could generate backlash.
Mr. Kurns spoke candidly over concerns of a backlash in an edit
or’s note that
led the issue. When he became the magazine’s editor two years
earlier, he said, he
had been warned, “Never use the words ‘climate change.’”
“I was told: ‘Readers hate that phrase. Just talk about the weath
er,’” he wrote.
The industry publication, which has a circulation of 390,000, w
as influenced by
some of the biggest names in agriculture taking a stand on the is
sue, Mr. Gullickson
said. The agricultural giant Cargill has started to lobby member
s of Congress and
urged farmers to take climate change seriously, saying inaction
would be detrimental
to the United States economy.
The response to the magazine’s take on the issues has been split
.
“When you start quoting ‘climate scientists’ and the United Nati
ons,” wrote in
one reader, Bill Clinger, a farmer based in Harpster, Ohio, “you
are as nutty as Al
Gore.” Measures to control emissions, he said, “are just seducti
ve names for socialist
programs intended to micromanage people and businesses.”

Mr. Gullickson said some readers thanked him. “Finally, a farmi
ng magazine
comes to terms with what is going on with the weather,” wrote
Paul Jereczek of
Dodge, Wis.
Reached by phone, Mr. Jereczek, who runs a dairy farm, express
ed exasperation
at people’s inability to speak openly. “The phrase has become s
o politicized, it’s just
hard to talk about,” he said. “But we talk about everything else.
Even round here,
protecting soil is such a hot topic right now. But we talk about t
he soil, saving
fertilizer, that sort of thing.”
Grouse to the Rescue
Mark Salvo, vice president at the wildlife conservation group D
efenders of
Wildlife, might be a walking, talking stereotype of the kind of e
nvironmentalist who
so frustrates Mr. Palen. An Oregonian now based in Washington
18. , he spent 15 years
in the American West fighting to conserve fish and wildlife on p
ublic lands.
But Mr. Salvo thinks he knows an unlikely —
and highly sympathetic —
character to bring Kansans and others together around climate c
hange: the lesser
prairie-chicken.
Known for its shock of yellow hair and bright orange cheeks, th
e lesser prairie-
chicken once roamed the Great Plains. Today, though, the grous
e is under threat —
its populations reduced to isolated pockets in western Kansas, C
olorado and the
Texas-New Mexico border as its habitat succumbs to climate-in
duced drought,
farming, drilling and other human activity.
The group has been petitioning the Fish and Wildlife Service to
relist the lesser
prairie-chicken as a threatened species under the Endangered Sp
ecies Act. The bird
found itself taken off the list after a lawsuit in 2014 backed by t
he oil and gas
industry, which argues that any protective measures would mean
added costs for
energy developers.
Mr. Salvo has found that to gain allies it doesn’t always help to
start with the
role climate change plays in harming the bird’s habitat. Instead,
his movement has
tried to find common ground, highlighting the historical heritag
e of the lesser

ra Ingalls Wilder
wrote about eating prairie-chicken mush.
Mr. Salvo also stresses how grouse-friendly practices can be go
od for farming,
too, backing a federal program that provides financial aid to pri
vate landowners who
adopt those practices. Leaving corn stubble standing after harve
st gives the birds
food and places to hide, for example, while also helping farmers
protect the soil.
“Sometimes, to gain allies, it helps to focus on issues of commo
n concern, to
support local economic development as well as species conserva
tion,” he said. “It
helps everybody come to the table.”
20. Last week, Mr. Palen, the farmer, was again talking weather —
if not climate
change —
at a conference of no-till farmers in Salina, Kan. Sessions inclu
ded “Using
Your Water Efficiently,” “Making Weather Work for You in 20
17” and “Building
Healthy Soil With Mob Grazing,” a practice that helps to fertiliz
e the land.
And yes, Mr. Palen says, he is on board with saving the lesser p
rairie-chicken. “I
often think of ways I can protect their habitat,” he said. “I enjoy
wildlife.”
