Optometric vision therapy is a program of care individualized for each patient to develop, restore, or enhance visual function and performance. It is conducted under the supervision of an optometrist and may include procedures like pursuit and saccade therapy, visual-vestibular therapy, and accommodative therapy. Although optometric vision therapy evolved from orthoptics, orthoptics is limited to eye exercises to treat eye coordination problems, whereas vision therapy treats disorders of the visual system through a blend of medical, developmental, and behavioral therapies. In summary, optometric vision therapy is a complete program that includes orthoptics as one of its therapies, but is not synonymous with orthoptics alone.
