2. 1. Abstract: Ophthalmology
The word ophthalmology comes from the Greek word. Ophthalmology
literally means "the science of eyes”. The branch of Ophthalmology and
Visual Sciences is related with helping patients improve and maintain their
vision. Ophthalmology is the study of medicine that deals with the diseases
and surgeries of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in visual medical
and surgical eye problems. They are both surgical and medical specialists.
2. Treatments and Services
Eye specialists do tests according to requirement on basis of individual
needs. These tests may include some or all of the following:
Dilated eye exam – This exam includes measurements of near and
distance visual perception, colour vision, and optical pressure. The eye
doctor will also examine the entire eye with a focus on the retina.
Visual field testing – This enables the eye doctor to see whether a person
has any part of vision failure. This can prove useful for situations such as
retinal dystrophy or degeneration, which can cause loss of peripheral
(tangential) vision, and macular dystrophy, which can cause blind spots in
central vision.

3. Electrophysiology – Electrophysiological tests illustrate the eye doctor
how electrical signals are transmitted inside the eye. They include:
Electroretinogram (ERG) – This test measures how the retina responds
to light, and is used for people who have symptoms of a retinal disease.
There are two main types of ERG: the full-field and the multifocal ERG.
Each test measures the retina’s response in a different way.
Electro-oculogram (EOG) – This test is like the ERG, only it is used for
people with symptoms of a macular dystrophy. It takes one hour for the
EOG to perform.
Family history – For this exam, a genetic counselor will ask the patient
questions to help determine whether he or she has an inherited eye disease,
and how it might have been inherited. The counselor will then work with
one of our doctors to provide the patient with options for molecular tests
that can confirm the diagnosis and inheritance.
Additional testing – This can include blood tests, photography of the
eye, and color vision testing.
