TwinStrata CloudArray - Disaster Recovery as a Serviceinside-BigData.com
In this slidecast, Nicos Vekiarides from TwinStrata presents: TwinStrata CloudArray 4.5 with DRaaS.
Today, we use a combination of TwinStrata, cloud storage and an always-on cloud compute environment to drive our disaster recovery strategy,” said Vernon Jackson, senior systems engineer, SEPA Laboratories. “While it works well, it's pretty costly to keep secondary infrastructure up and running in the cloud just so we can run DR tests once a quarter. With this new CloudArray DRaaS offering, we can eliminate eight months worth of cloud compute costs, while still maintaining a quarterly DR test schedule. That's a huge savings.”

How the City of Melrose Reached the Clouds with VMware on NetApp FlexPodNetApp
Located approximately seven miles north of Boston, Melrose is a small
city with a population of about 28,000. Since its settlement in the 18th century, Melrose has offered residents a desir- able compromise between a crowded metropolis and rural Massachusetts. Predominantly residential, with exqui- site Victorian homes dating from the late 1800s, the city has a long-standing tradition of self-sufficiency, with excel- lent schools and cultural attractions.
However, the city’s IT infrastructure had become outdated. Robin Gadd on Cloud Computing in FE at AoC Annual Conference Birmingham Nov 2010robingadd
This document discusses how cloud computing can help colleges improve IT efficiency and effectiveness. It outlines the traditional costs of owning IT infrastructure on-premises versus renting computing resources from the cloud. Cloud computing allows colleges to focus on education by outsourcing non-essential IT services, gaining access to more storage and computing power in a flexible and scalable way. While cloud computing presents some risks around data security, legal compliance and service reliability, it also offers opportunities to reduce expenditures, improve services, innovate more quickly, and focus internal resources on core educational missions.
Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. It allows users to access technology-based services from the internet without knowledge of, expertise with, or control over the technology infrastructure that supports them. Some key benefits of cloud computing include reduced costs, increased storage and computing power, and accessibility of data from any internet-connected device. While cloud computing provides advantages, concerns exist around data security, privacy, reliability, and lack of control over the infrastructure supporting the cloud.

AFPIF 2015 – Impact of Peering on Angani
We invested in the Grid and built infrastructure so businesses don't have to, providing reliable hosting services like email, domains, bus tickets, telemedicine, and TV. We grew from 0 to 40 customers within 12 months, becoming the fourth largest local hosting provider and helping alleviate stress on traditional providers. However, 90% of local African content is still hosted outside the continent despite efforts to localize content. Our collective mission should be to localize another 15-20% of internet traffic on the continent.
PEFCU was facing challenges with managing its 250 employee email mailboxes, including inefficient searches for HR investigations and legal requests. This caused network performance issues and lack of an archiving system for future compliance. PEFCU implemented EMC SourceOne Email Management and EMC storage solutions. This centralized email archiving across EMC hardware reduced local storage usage and improved network performance while automating retention policies. It also enabled fast, efficient searches of past employee emails to support HR investigations in minutes rather than weeks. The new system prepared PEFCU for future compliance requirements.

boys and girls.
Challenges due to seasonality are recurring: the Company receives up to 1.1 million communica-
tions a day (including handwritten letters, emails, FAX’s, and digital attachments) during the
months of November and December. Historically, processing gift requests - and capturing critical
essentials manufacturing and fulfilment data - was entirely manual. This time-consuming and sometimes
inaccurate process could lead to manufacturing discrepancies and high costs for the Company.

make sense of. Petabytes of content: names, addresses, toy requests. All of it was pouring into
our North Pole office and on a variety of communications platforms: emails, email attachments,
FAXs, social network messaging, and handwritten letters – we had a Big Data problem!
“Things were a mess. The poor Elves were working 24/7 trying to make sense of it all. The
overtime costs alone were killing us! What’s more, we expected communication volumes to
increase exponentially. What we required was a method to lower overall costs of transport-
ing order requests to the North Pole, a method to increase operational efficiencies, the flexi-

methodology that would allow us to redeploy resources to achieve these objectives.”

CIO and VP of Data Dispatch, Premier Elf was already familiar with EMC and its capabilities.
“Since 2008 we have used EMC products and services and were pleased with the results,”
Premier Elf explains. “I learned that EMC technology was at the forefront of Private Cloud
technologies. Their vision aligned with our own. So I told them that Father Christmas Inc was
considering setting up local hubs in capital cities worldwide to receive and process all com-
munications. We believed that by geographically dispersing our data capture and sorting
efforts, we would lower costs and increase efficiencies.”
EMC Consultants travelled to the North Pole, providing a comprehensive recommendation for
an EMC Private Cloud Solution. “When I saw the anticipated performance increase, I immedi-
ately recommended the solution to the CEO,” Elf states.
exPediting ComPrehensive delivery for Christmas
Delivery and rollout of the EMC Private Cloud solution was tightly scheduled. EMC Private
Cloud-enabled data storage infrastructure was installed at the Company’s North Pole HQ. Elf
and his team quickly established Virtual Machines for operating application requirements.
Separate VMs were created to hold critical used for manufacturing, fulfilment, and marketing
requirements. EMC also installed Business Intelligence analytics. A separate disaster recov-
ery and backup data center was created at Father Christmas Inc’s Palm Beach Florida Sum-
mer HQ. The Company now had a tiered data storage infrastructure in place to solve their
‘big data’ problem. Additionally, RSA cloud security applications provide peace of mind to Elf
and the Board of Directors day in and day out.
“ We’ve cut operating costs in half, while ensuring the future due to the scalability
of EMC Private Cloud solutions. Increased productivity, flexibility, and efficiency
have enhanced our competitive position. Our EMC solution is so effective it will
pay for itself in 24 months!”
mrs s Claus, vP finanCe, father Christmas inC
“We knew that our journey to the Private Cloud could deliver for Christmas,” Elf states. “That
said some of our Elves were a little reluctant. Moving to Private Cloud requires something of
a mindset change. They knew that data was going to be stored thousands of miles from
