This document discusses methods for selecting the appropriate safety integrity level (SIL) for burner management systems. It presents a 7-step quantitative method to estimate consequences and likelihood of failures in order to determine the required SIL. The method involves calculating potential effect zones from vapor cloud explosions or pool fires, estimating personnel density within effect zones, performing layer of protection analyses to determine failure frequencies, and using these factors to calculate the probability of failure on demand and corresponding risk reduction factor to select the SIL. The document provides an example calculation for a natural gas-fired boiler to demonstrate how easily the 7-step method can be applied in practice.
