2. FLYING People dreamed of flying like birds for thousand of years. Today there are many different kinds or aircraft and, everyday, millions travel around the world in planes.
4. 1783 The first machine to carry a person into the air was a hot- air –balloon. It was built by the Montgolfier Brothers in 1783.
5. 1852 The first successful airship was built in 1852. Airships were pushed by propellers and they were a popular means of transport in the early 20th century.
6. 1890 The first aircraft with wings were gliders. Otto Lilienthal made many short glider flights in the 1890s.
7. 1903 In 1903 the Wright Brother, American bicycle makers, built the first powered airplane. Their plane was driven by a very light petrol engine that they designed and built themselves because the other available engines were too heavy.
8. 1939 The first true helicopters, wich lifted vertically, had two blades that turned in opposite directions and were first used in 1939.
9. 1949 The Comet was the world’s first jet airline and it flew for the first time in 1949.
10. 2011 The super jumbo is currently the world’s largest passager plane. It carry 555 passengers on 2 decks.
