5. Ideas Hub is a week-long programme of
activities exploring the links between
science, medicine, life and art with a
cohort of future leaders. The inaugural
event takes place in September 2018.
We will be asking the question “Can we
teach transdisciplinary research?”
Hubbub were the first residents of The Hub. The
team from Durham University, led by Professor
Felicity Callard & Professor Charles Fernyhough,
explored the topic of Rest. In addition they
published widely on ‘how to conduct
interdisciplinary research in a public venue’.
Heart n Soul will be the
third residents of The Hub from
October 2018.
Heart n Soul is an award-winning creative arts
company and charity who provide opportunities for
people with learning disabilities to take part in
creative activities.
Their aim is to explore disability through the lens of
autism. Their core research team will include people
with learning disabilities.
Wellcome HUB
Created out of Mind (COOM) are the second and current
residents of The Hub.
Led by Professor Sebastian Crutch from UCL, COOM
have taken a co-creative approach to exploring
perceptions and understanding of dementias through
science and the creative arts. The team explores what
dementia means to us all, challenges traditional definitions
and common misconceptions, and unlocks what we can
learn about art, consciousness and the brain from the
experiences of people with dementia.

Hybrid experiments: a long & winding road…
• Lots with little & local impact; memorable delights against backdrop of mild nervousness
• Hybrid Experimentation is hard; essentially difficult; trial & error; no formula…
• “If I knew where the good songs came from, I’d go there more often.” Leonard Cohen
• Tolerate“internal agitation or tension or uncertainty that makes us just plain uncomfortable. … We
want to get rid of that discomfort…, so we take a decision not because we’re sure it’s the best
decision but because taking it will make us feel better” …: “the most creative people learn to tolerate
that discomfort for much longer… and so because they put in more pondering time their solutions
are more creative.” John Cleese
