This document summarizes a study that tested running a small gasoline engine with hydrogen fuel to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions. The engine's performance, emissions, and cylinder pressures were measured when running on hydrogen and gasoline. When running on hydrogen, specific fuel consumption and NOx emissions were reduced by around 57% and 66% respectively without backfiring. Emissions of CO, CO2 and HC also reduced to near-zero levels. The results showed the small gasoline engine could operate efficiently on pure hydrogen at a lean air-fuel mixture without needing expensive emission control systems.
