Bioclones is a South African company that manufactures biopharmaceuticals, including active pharmaceutical ingredients. It currently produces two biologics, Repotin (EPO) and G-CSF, to treat renal failure, cancer, and other diseases. However, South Africa imports most biologics and lacks domestic manufacturing capacity. Bioclones aims to develop South Africa's biotech industry but faces challenges in gaining support from the Department of Health and Treasury, which predominantly support multinational companies. Local production of biologics could create jobs, skills, economic growth, and ensure access and supply of important medicines.
