Cloud Computing: Making the right choiceIndicThreads
Session Presented @IndicThreads Cloud Computing Conference, Pune, India ( http://u10.indicthreads.com )
------------
The concept of cloud computing is quickly scaling the chasm between hype and reality. Cloud Computing is rapidly becoming popular amongst enterprises that realize the benefits of shared infrastructure, lowered costs and minimal management overheads. But not all organizations and applications may benefit from a cloud computing platform. A legacy application ported in a native fashion to a cloud computing platform may not utilize any of the platform’s USPs at all. More importantly, wrong choice of platform can be disastrous. Deciding the optimal cloud vendor or platform for your requirements is a complex task.
Consider the plethora of choices available in the world of cloud computing:
* Public Cloud or Private Cloud or Hybrid Cloud
* Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS): Amazon AWS, Rackspace Cloud, GoGrid, Terremark,
* Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS): Google AppEngine, Microsoft Azure, Heroku
* Software-as-a-Service (SaaS): Salesforce, Netsuite, Google Apps, saas.com
* Should you use IaaS, PaaS or SaaS for your application?
* Which cloud database fits your application? SimpleDB, SQL, RDS, Hadoop?
We will discuss the various business and technology factors to consider, while choosing a cloud vendor. We will explore the pros and cons of various cloud vendors and their offerings. Lastly, we will also discuss some real-life use-cases of applications and servers being migrated to cloud computing and what factors led to selection of a particular cloud vendor.
Takeaways from the session
This talk would serve as an introduction to a wide variety of cloud computing platforms. The audience would be able to answer questions like: “What options are available for cloud computing?”, “What are their pros and cons?”, “Should I consider migrating my application or server to the cloud?”, “Should I use IaaS, PaaS or SaaS?”, “Which is the best cloud vendor for my use-case?”

AWS Technology Evangelist Jinesh Varia discusses how to think about TCO of Storage and typical mistakes prospects make when trying to apples to apples comparison between cloud infrastructure service and on-premises storage
When you order a hosting account you get access to a special type of computer called a server. This server lets you upload files to display on your site and lets other people access your site via your domain name.
Hosting accounts come in different sizes, which determines how many files and media you can have on your site and how many people can visit the site each month. These measurements are called disk space and bandwidth.
Cloud computing revolutionized application design, and changed the way people think about infrastructure. The rise of cloud computing coincided with a new generation of applications and services that required scale. New architecture and design had to take into account low latency network connectivity, geographic distribution, large real-time data stores, the ability to meet demand (while not knowing exactly how much demand to handle), and so much more. We refer to this as Internet Scale.
Yet most discussion of scale and cloud revolves around compute as virtualized instances, which have defined configurations and constrained options. Delivering on the promise of Internet Scale involves substantial upfront design, and a comprehensive understanding of the entire architecture - from the underlying hardware, to the operating system, the application stack, services, and deployment. And, it involves choice - choices you should make based on your requirements. Join us for a discussion on the many facets of Internet Scale, and how it can apply to your applications and services.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

10 Things To Know Before You Buy The Cloud - Open Spectrum Inc - Sean Patrick Tario
1. 10 Tips
That Have Saved Our Clients
Over 50%
On Their Recent IT Purchases
…And Will Help You Save $$ Too!
2. 10 Tips
1. Don’t Get Confused
2. Ignore The Marketing
3. Ignore The Hype
4. Know What You Actually Need
5. Know Your Options
6. Do an Intelligent Evaluation
7. Colo vs. Hosting
8. Dedicated vs. Shared
9. Know What You Should Pay
10. Know When To Ask For Help
3. 1. Don’t Get Confused
≠ Cloud
≠ Cloud
(1) Salesforce = SaaS delivered within a hybrid shared
elastic hosting environment
(2) AWS = IaaS creating a hybrid shared elastic
hosting environment
4. 2. Ignore the Marketing
When people say “cloud”, what most really mean is
shared elastic hosting. The term “cloud computing” is
pure marketing hype.
An elastic computing environment is achieved via the virtualization
and automation of physical IT infrastructure so that the host
environment can quickly respond to fluctuations in the demand for
resources.
The question thus should be, “Is elastic hosting really the
best solution for you right now…
…and 12 months from now?”
5. 3. Ignore the Hype
People often highlight the flexibility of elastic solutions and
feel it is a one size fits all solution, but forget that there are
some serious drawbacks such as:
(1) Lack of control and customization
(2) Lack of proactive monitoring
(3) Lack of application and data mobility
(4) Increased costs as compute utilization scales
While elastic hosting has yielded real savings for SOME, and is
ideal for specific use cases and during specific stages of a
company’s growth, it is NOT the optimal solution for ALL
6. 4. Know What You Actually Need
Rather than asking what your “cloud” strategy should be, you should
instead be asking:
(1) Is this solution cost efficient? Are there other solutions
available that will provide the same or better value?
(2) Will this service be reliable? How will a service outage effect
my business?
(3) How am I notified if there is a service interruption? What is
the process of bringing my application back up again after an
outage?
Asking the right questions will help you determine
which of the many available hosting solutions and
options are right for you
7. 4. Know What You Actually Need (cont.)
(1) Which is more critical now;
Your Application or Your Infrastructure?
(2) How much backend control do you really need?
(3) What skill-sets and experience does your existing team
have to control, manage and scale your backend efficiently?
(4) What are your applications detailed compute, power and
network requirements today?
(5) How will these requirements change as your business
scales?
8. 5. Know Your Options
