10 Cloverfield Lane
Casting Shots
Casting Shots - Michelle
We chose Vicky to play Michelle because she has
similar looks to her, short hair and same facial
features. As well as this she looks a similar age and
overall her characteristics match well.
Vicky has the look of a strong independent women,
this is what Michelle comes across as in the film 10
Cloverfield Lane.
As well a this she looks innocent and sweet, this
works to her favour and she gets the audience on
side.
We chose to have Vicky wear jeans and a plain t
shirt, this was so that she didn’t stand out much and
just worse similar clothing and colours as the trailer
uses blue and yellow as recurring colours.
Casting Shots – Emmett
Emmet’s character was played by Haydn, this was
because we needed someone with longer hair and
quite neutral looking.
It was harder to re create some of Emmet’s shots
with his sling, and so we decided to ignore the sling
and film without.
In some shots of the trailer we had to rough Haydn
up a bit, this was just to fit in with the experience
Emmet was having.
We tried to match Emmets facial expressions with
Haydn's as far as possible to make it look more
realistic in certain scenes, such as the lights
flickering.
Casting Shots - Howard
We used Adam as Howard, this was the hardest to
cast as Howard is an older man, we originally though
about having Howard played by a teacher, however
this became difficult when we would have to find a
teacher that had spare time.
Once we realised that we wouldn’t be able to use
someone more similar to looks, we decided to use
Adam because of his past in drama and the fact he
had seen the film and knew what he was doing in
the role.
Adam was a good fit for Howard because he really
got the facial expressions and hand actions down
which was imperative because of the lack of
dialogue.
Location Shots
Bunker – Anti Bullying Room
We chose to film most of our scenes in the anti-bullying room within our
school because we found that it had a very homely atmosphere to it, which
matched the atmosphere of the trailer. We thought this would be an
effective location because it already contained sofas, tables, bookshelves
and other items that appeared within the trailer. This saved us time
collecting various different props so we could focus more on filming.
We faced some difficulties whilst filming within this location, such as the
bright natural light of the room. This was a problem for us because the
trailer displays the scenes to be quite dark/dim. To overcome this issue we
decided to use the editing software and effects to darker the scenes.
Tunnel Staircase
Another location we chose to film in was the staircase because we wanted to aim
to replicate the tunnel staircase within the trailer. We thought this was an effective
location to use because we thought it closely matched the staircase presented in
the trailer. The difficulties we faced within this location was replicating the actual
shape of the tunnel and also the bright natural light entering through the window.
We tried to overcome this problem by again using editing techniques and effects to
darken the edges of the scenes to create a tunnel-like image. We further covered
the huge windows with dark blankets to make the shot more dim so it appeared
more spooky like the trailer.
Wardrobe Decisions
Howard
Howard is wearing a checked
shirt, which we replicated in
our trailer recreation. The dark
colours he is wearing could
represent his anger and it adds
to the mysterious nature of the
trailer (as the audience don’t
know what is outside). We
used a blue checked shirt as
Howard is also wearing blue on
his shirt, which could represent
his cold personality.
Michelle
Michelle is wearing just a
vest, which could represent
that she is dirty and she
doesn't’t care. This conforms
to the stereotypical view of
people her age. We replicated
the dirty look of the vest in
our trailer recreation
Emmett
Emmett is wearing a
fairly plain T-shirt,
which we used in our
trailer recreation. The
T-shirt could
represent Emmett’s
boredom from sitting
in the bunker and
doing nothing.
Props
Props List
As our trailer was set in a bunker we had quite a few props to make it look as
normal and close to the trailer as possible.
Our props list consisted of the following:
Flower, puzzles, books, a jukebox, board game, sandwiches and a vent.
We used all of these props and made some of them in order to get as close to
the original trailer as possible.
An example of something we made was the vent, we used an old picnic box
that’s lid opened so that we could re create the air vents door moving
downwards.

Our only issue that we faced was that some shots
we had done were not at the correct angle, this
meant that when we came to editing it was harder
as we had to edit some bits and leave others so we
could re-film them.
However during the editing process we found that
you could flip clips, this made it easier.
Another shot we had to re film was the lighting
shots near the end of the clip, just to experiment
more with more time and changes of lighting.
