Evaluation Task 1

A2 Media
How have we used the forms and conventions
of real media products?
For our production, we have used various case studies from which
we have examined ideas, concepts, layouts and compositions to
use collectively as a team. These case studies have helped us to
create a production which correlates towards the conventions of a
traditional horror film production.
For example, I analysed the film
“IT” (2017 horror) for teaser trailer
conventions, so that I new the
general bounds in which teaser
trailers for horrors reside.
In this presentation, I will be
showcasing how and where my
media product has developed and
challenged the conventions of real
horror productions.
Format Conventions
Teaser Trailer
Our “Huckleberry Woods” teaser trailer is 54 seconds long in total. We wanted
to make the trailer shorter than one minute but longer than 30 seconds so that
the normal conventions of teaser trailers would be involved in the production.
This shorter duration allowed us to fill the trailer with only the shots that we
wanted to put in, and also made sure that we did not give too much narrative
information away immediately.
Duration
Other teaser trailers
have a duration of
around 1 minute to 3
minutes. The film “IT”
has a duration of 2:33,
which is towards the
longer end for a teaser.
Most modern teaser
trailers are around 1:30
to 2:00, since they can
be more complex films.
The editing style for our trailer is sequential and montage-like. There is a short
continuous section in the first half, but the rest of the trailer is a montage of
clips which are heavy on action and movement. This keeps tension high and
doesn’t allow the viewer to stay comfortable in a particular scene – which they
will imagine that the characters would be feeling at that particular time.
Editing Style
You can see here that the
middle & end section of the
trailer have the highest
pace in terms of shot
duration. Again, this helps
to create tension and builds
a tempo which only ends
when we see the film title at
the end of the trailer.
The trailer features sound which correlates to the genre of the film (horror). In
the background, you can hear a dark & gloomy hum which sets the tone of both
the film and the trailer. This particular track was made in GarageBand. The
trailer also consists of synchronised sound which appears only when there is a
significant transition in the trailer.
Use of Sound
This synchronized sound has
an effect on the viewer,
because it puts an emphasis
on each transition which in
turn makes each shot more
effective at portraying fear
and tension. These transition
sounds also help to increase
the pace of the trailer, as you
can hear the quick transitions
At the end of the teaser trailer, we have used text to display the name of the
production and the billing block that we also used on the production poster. We
decided to include these features after watching other similar teaser trailers
(such as Blair Witch) and noticing that they did similar things with
billing blocks and film titles or release dates.
Text & Graphics
We also implemented graphical elements
throughout the duration of the trailer, such
as a recording interface which is usually
seen on camcorder recordings, which is
what we were using as props during the
trailer. This gave an authentic element to the
trailer because it makes the footage look
more realistic and provides the viewer a
perspective into how the characters are
recording each section and what camera we
are looking through.
In order for the trailer to be effective and authentic, we needed to limit the
amount of narrative information given to the audience. The aim for the teaser is
literally to ”tease” the audience into getting excited or ”hyped” for our
production. This is most likely going to be the first look that the viewer sees of
the production. If a lot of information is given out in the teaser, then there would
be no point of going to see the film in cinemas since you’d already know what
happens.
Narrative Information
We planned how much narrative information
would be given out when we were producing
the storyboard and script documents in pre-
production planning. This helped us to restrict
and supervise how the narrative of the trailer
pans-out compared to what we imagined the
whole film would be.
Format Conventions
Poster
The layout of this poster and the assets on it
are arranged differently to most conventional
film posters in modern horrors. The billing
block is located at the very top of the poster,
with the film titles below it. I decided to add a
line design to separate the block from the
title, so that it would be distinctly separated
from a distance. The release date of the
production is located immediately beneath
the title of the film, so that it can easily be
noticed by anyone that reads the title. The
empty space between the title and the
camcorder (which is the main focus) is to
exaggerate the woods setting that the picture
was taken. This establishes a theme and
suggests a the genre or tone of the film, even
if the viewer hasn’t yet seen the teaser trailer.
Layout
Format Conventions
Magazine Cover
For the magazine cover, we decided to use
Empire magazine to create a replica cover,
based on existing real-world covers. We took
inspiration from titles such as The Dark Knight,
in which they had various elements of horror
and thriller themes included on the cover, which
we tried to re-create with our own style and
twist. For example, the dirt stains on both of the
character’s faces was partly influenced by
Heath Ledger’s makeup from Empire’s Dark
Knight cover.
To make the magazine look authentic, we had
to use adhere to Empire’s usual composition for
each magazine cover. To do this, Adobe
Photoshop was used to layer the main image
on top of the Empire masterhead. I used a
lasso tool to outline the top of the heads before
deleting the background and overlaying them
on top of the masterhead.
Layout
Genre Conventions
Thriller/Horror Conventions
Narrative
Horror narratives usually follow similar prospects. There’s a victim or a group of victims
who are victimised by a villain or a group of villains. Psychological horrors may have
different outcomes and feature different prospects, but the aim of the film remains the
same: to frighten the audience.
Characters
Victims are often more innocent and normal characters, whereas villains tend to be
more intriguing, mysterious or unusual. This creates a sense of uncertainty and helps
to produce that vital fear factor used in horrors.
Setting & Location
The setting of horrors largely vary, from modern history to futuristic sci-fi thrillers. For
example, the thriller/horror film “alien” is set far into the future, but there are plenty of
other horrors set in historical eras, such as the Victorian era. The most common
locations for horrors to be set in include haunted houses, forests or caves. These
locations make it easy to create a suspenseful atmosphere.
Iconography & Style
The iconography of horrors usually revolves around elements of violence or danger,
which is why horror film posters often use creepy fonts to suggest these connotations.
The style of these horror films can be cheesy, serious or sinister depending on the
directions that the director chose to pursue.
Institutional Conventions
Institutional Conventions
Hollywood
For a major organisation like Hollywood, I would expect to see a media product that
conforms to the popular directive that films are taking at the present time. These films
are designed to attract as many people as possible and to generate as much money as
it can through selling tickets and retail copies. These films are also going to include
many of the most popular actors of the time, along with some up-and-coming
celebrities. Information about Hollywood films are presented on as many platforms as
possible.
British Indie
Independent films from Britain are likely to be based around one or two characters and
how they develop throughout that story (i.e. Submarine). These films are unlikely to
have heavy use of special effects or computer generated imagery. They are also not
going to attract as much of a large audience as Hollywood would do, as they tend to
cater towards a specific target audience. These indie films may have posters on public
walkways and billboards, but will mainly use the internet as an advertising platform.
Low Budget
Low budget films rely on actors who are not very well-known to create a product which
could be sold to a smaller audience. No CGI would be used on these films, as it is a
costly process. Filming time is likely to be no longer than a few weeks in total and the
films may be shorter than ones you have seen in the cinema. These productions rely
on free social media advertising to sell copies.

  • 7. At the end of the teaser trailer, we have used text to display the name of the production and the billing block that we also used on the production poster. We decided to include these features after watching other similar teaser trailers (such as Blair Witch) and noticing that they did similar things with billing blocks and film titles or release dates. Text & Graphics We also implemented graphical elements throughout the duration of the trailer, such as a recording interface which is usually seen on camcorder recordings, which is what we were using as props during the trailer. This gave an authentic element to the trailer because it makes the footage look more realistic and provides the viewer a perspective into how the characters are recording each section and what camera we are looking through.
  • 8. In order for the trailer to be effective and authentic, we needed to limit the amount of narrative information given to the audience. The aim for the teaser is literally to ”tease” the audience into getting excited or ”hyped” for our production. This is most likely going to be the first look that the viewer sees of the production. If a lot of information is given out in the teaser, then there would be no point of going to see the film in cinemas since you’d already know what happens. Narrative Information We planned how much narrative information would be given out when we were producing the storyboard and script documents in pre- production planning. This helped us to restrict and supervise how the narrative of the trailer pans-out compared to what we imagined the whole film would be.
  • 10. The layout of this poster and the assets on it are arranged differently to most conventional film posters in modern horrors. The billing block is located at the very top of the poster, with the film titles below it. I decided to add a line design to separate the block from the title, so that it would be distinctly separated from a distance. The release date of the production is located immediately beneath the title of the film, so that it can easily be noticed by anyone that reads the title. The empty space between the title and the camcorder (which is the main focus) is to exaggerate the woods setting that the picture was taken. This establishes a theme and suggests a the genre or tone of the film, even if the viewer hasn’t yet seen the teaser trailer. Layout
  • 12. For the magazine cover, we decided to use Empire magazine to create a replica cover, based on existing real-world covers. We took inspiration from titles such as The Dark Knight, in which they had various elements of horror and thriller themes included on the cover, which we tried to re-create with our own style and twist. For example, the dirt stains on both of the character’s faces was partly influenced by Heath Ledger’s makeup from Empire’s Dark Knight cover. To make the magazine look authentic, we had to use adhere to Empire’s usual composition for each magazine cover. To do this, Adobe Photoshop was used to layer the main image on top of the Empire masterhead. I used a lasso tool to outline the top of the heads before deleting the background and overlaying them on top of the masterhead. Layout
  • 14. Thriller/Horror Conventions Narrative Horror narratives usually follow similar prospects. There’s a victim or a group of victims who are victimised by a villain or a group of villains. Psychological horrors may have different outcomes and feature different prospects, but the aim of the film remains the same: to frighten the audience. Characters Victims are often more innocent and normal characters, whereas villains tend to be more intriguing, mysterious or unusual. This creates a sense of uncertainty and helps to produce that vital fear factor used in horrors. Setting & Location The setting of horrors largely vary, from modern history to futuristic sci-fi thrillers. For example, the thriller/horror film “alien” is set far into the future, but there are plenty of other horrors set in historical eras, such as the Victorian era. The most common locations for horrors to be set in include haunted houses, forests or caves. These locations make it easy to create a suspenseful atmosphere. Iconography & Style The iconography of horrors usually revolves around elements of violence or danger, which is why horror film posters often use creepy fonts to suggest these connotations. The style of these horror films can be cheesy, serious or sinister depending on the directions that the director chose to pursue.
  • 16. Institutional Conventions Hollywood For a major organisation like Hollywood, I would expect to see a media product that conforms to the popular directive that films are taking at the present time. These films are designed to attract as many people as possible and to generate as much money as it can through selling tickets and retail copies. These films are also going to include many of the most popular actors of the time, along with some up-and-coming celebrities. Information about Hollywood films are presented on as many platforms as possible. British Indie Independent films from Britain are likely to be based around one or two characters and how they develop throughout that story (i.e. Submarine). These films are unlikely to have heavy use of special effects or computer generated imagery. They are also not going to attract as much of a large audience as Hollywood would do, as they tend to cater towards a specific target audience. These indie films may have posters on public walkways and billboards, but will mainly use the internet as an advertising platform. Low Budget Low budget films rely on actors who are not very well-known to create a product which could be sold to a smaller audience. No CGI would be used on these films, as it is a costly process. Filming time is likely to be no longer than a few weeks in total and the films may be shorter than ones you have seen in the cinema. These productions rely on free social media advertising to sell copies.
