• Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Hermosa, Illinois. He took drawing
and photography classes in McKinley High School in Chicago and took night
courses at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was also a contributing cartoonist for
the school paper as well. In 1919, he moved to Kansas City to become a
newspaper artist. His brother Roy got him a job at Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio.
Disney also worked at Kansas City Film Ad Company where he created cut-out
animation. He was going to screen a type of cartoon called Laugh-O-Grams with
Fred Harman to make a series of seven minute fairy tales called Alice in
Cartoonland however the studio got in a huge amount of debt and Disney had to
declare bankruptcy. Soon after, Walt and Roy got a huge amount of money and
relocated to California where they began the Disney Brothers’ Studio. A deal was
struck between the studio and Margaret Winkler to produce the Alice cartoons.
Disney also created a character called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. However a few
years later Winkler stole the rights to Oswald forcing Walt to create a brand new
mascot. Mickey Mouse was the new character and he appeared in classic Disney
cartoons such as Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho and the famous Steamboat
Willie with Walt voicing him. This made him famous and he continued to create
short animations and animated movies which grew in popularity.

• Yuji Naka was born on September 17, 1965 and is a Japanese video game
programmer, designer and producer that is best known as the original
creator of Sonic the Hedgehog Series. Naka learned to replicate and debug
code printed in magazines. This made him practice writing code during
school. After high school he decided he didn’t want to go to university and
stay in his home town. In 1983, Sega was looking for programming
assistants and Naka decided to apply for the job. After an interview, he
began working for Sega designing maps and checking floppy disks for a
game called Road Runner. Yuji Naka first game he worked on was called
Girls Garden with Hiroshi Kawaguchi which was part of their training
process. His boss was impressed with his work with that they decided to
create Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System to further Naka’s skills.
His breakthrough was when he created Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega
Mega Drive in association with Naoto Ohshima who created the character
and Hirokazu Yasuhara creating the zones. He continued to work with the
same group up until 2002 after Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara had
left Sega leaving Naka to leave Sega on March 16 2006. In recent times Yuji
Naka joined Square Enix in January 2018.
