Negative space is the empty area around an object or form. It is important for designers to utilize negative space for accurately depicting the positive space and exploring composition. Negative space allows examination of object composition and their relationship to the space occupied. Shapes can be geometric or organic, and on a flat plane will only appear 3D through edge and value observations. Designers should break apart shapes and analyze edges and values, as well as understand techniques like high key, low key, and contrast which use tonal values and differences to create emphasis.
