Since the CAPM model Sharpe (1965) and the first “fundamental” model by King (1966) the use of “factors” in alpha generation and risk modeling has become mainstream. However, the types of factors we employ and the techniques we use to model relationships have in general not progressed much since. In addition, many of our favorite techniques assume that the world is static, whereas of course markets evolve and change dramatically; as we have seen so vividly illustrated over the last few years.
We review fundamental, macro-economic, and statistical factors, describing the advantages and disadvantages of each, and review some newer techniques that explicitly allow for evolving relationships in data sets and harness emerging technologies that can capture much more nuanced relationships than simple correlation: “flexible” least-squares regression, artificial immune systems, single-pass clustering, semantic clustering, social network influence measurement, layer-embedded networks, block-modeling, and more.

As part of your discussion, consider the implications of the fact that the bulk of trading in capital markets is in outstanding securities and analyze the meaning of the terms "depth," "breadth," and "resiliency" as descriptions of capital markets. Include in your discussion the types of legislative and regulatory reforms that might be or have recently been instituted in order to improve the efficiency of capital markets and the role of "insider trading" and the SEC as they affect market efficiency.

Semester Project
The objective of the project is to simulate a problem you might face in your first job or business—developing the best 2 year forecast for company sales. Forecasting is an important process in almost all businesses and is an important skill to possess as an employee. The project is due by midnight Central Time on 12/2/2013. You are strongly encouraged to spread the work throughout the semester.
1. Selecting independent (X) variables for your project
Hopefully you have all passed this stage. You need to pick X variable quarterly data sets. Make sure the data are NOT seasonally adjusted. The data relationships should be logical and not spurious. For example, do not use the price of hamburger to forecast auto sales.
2. Writing an abstract
After you pick your topic, it is a good idea to write a brief abstract to help focus your thoughts. The abstract should not be more than a page. It should include
(i) State your forecasting problem- develop the best forecast of each variable.
(ii) Information about and description of your data
(iii) Description of your proposed models
3. Body of the paper
The paper will contain detailed explanations of your thought processes and methodology. At every stage you need to answer the following questions for each variable:
(i) What did you do (ex: Winter’s method with these parameter values…)
(ii) Why did you do it?
(iii) What did you find? (Interpretation of your results)
(iv) What is your conclusion?
Remember this is a business project report for your company – Do Not Show failed model attempts. Show only the best model for each variable for each forecast method.
4. Methodology
The body of your paper will include all four major forecasting techniques:
(i)
Smoothing for each X variable (Chapters 8): You need explain what, why, how etc.
(ii)
Box-Jenkins for each X variable (Chapters 9, 10, 11, 12):
(iii) Decomposition for each X variable (Chapter 7)
(iv) Multiple Regression forecast of the sales variable (Y) (Chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6): You will need other variable(s) to help explain the variation in the sales variable of interest. You need to start looking for those explanatory (X) variables!!
5. Appendix
Your appendix should contain all the relevant supporting printouts such as the tests, plots, graphs etc. that were not used in the discussion in the body of the presentation. It is better to divide the appendix into parts where each part is representing the output from each methodology (ex: Appendix A: Variable Data and citations, Appendix B: X variable outputs, Appendix C: Sales Revenue outputs). Don’t forget to name or number the appendices, you will need to refer to them when you are talking about a specific methodology.

The objective of the project is to simulate a problem you might face in your first job or business—developing the best 2 year forecast for company sales. Forecasting is an important process in almost all businesses and is an important skill to possess as an employee. The project is due by midnight Central Time on 12/2/2013. You are strongly encouraged to spread the work throughout the semester.
1. Selecting independent (X) variables for your project
Hopefully you have all passed this stage. You need to pick X variable quarterly data sets. Make sure the data are NOT seasonally adjusted. The data relationships should be logical and not spurious. For example, do not use the price of hamburger to forecast auto sales.
2. Writing an abstract
After you pick your topic, it is a good idea to write a brief abstract to help focus your thoughts. The abstract should not be more than a page. It should include
(i) State your forecasting problem- develop the best forecast of each variable.
(ii) Information about and description of your data
(iii) Description of your proposed models
3. Body of the paper
The paper will contain detailed explanations of your thought processes and methodology. At every stage you need to answer the following questions for each variable:
(i) What did you do (ex: Winter’s method with these parameter values…)
(ii) Why did you do it?
(iii) What did you find? (Interpretation of your results)
(iv) What is your conclusion?
Remember this is a business project report for your company – Do Not Show failed model attempts. Show only the best model for each variable for each forecast method.
4. Methodology
The body of your paper will include all four major forecasting techniques:

Smoothing for each X variable (Chapters 8): You need explain what, why, how etc.
(ii)
Box-Jenkins for each X variable (Chapters 9, 10, 11, 12):

Your appendix should contain all the relevant supporting printouts such as the tests, plots, graphs etc. that were not used in the discussion in the body of the presentation. It is better to divide the appendix into parts where each part is representing the output from each methodology (ex: Appendix A: Variable Data and citations, Appendix B: X variable outputs, Appendix C: Sales Revenue outputs). Goals
Completion of this project should provide participants with an understanding of how equityinvesting is affected by stock selection, therelative risks of each stock choice, and how riskis defined and controlled through portfoliocreations. Upon completion of the project,participants are expected to be familiar withconcepts of rates of return along varioustemporal dimensions, stand-alone risk, portfoliorisk, and where to locate stock performanceinformation leading to a cursory ability to conductequity research.
Solution
A cross section of publicly traded companies isselected by each participant as their research assignment. Individual securities are analyzed fortheir respective historical risk-return tradeoff performance. In Part 2 of this project, analystsare grouped together to construct a well-diversified portfolio of equity securities and are taskedto find an optimal portfolio construction.
Project Outline
The final set of deliverables for this analysis is a multi-page executive summary along with
appendices supporting your assessments as securities analysts. The project consists of finding
financial information on selected equity securities. Information about securities must be gleaned from various University of Washington subscription databases and other free internet sources.
All collected information is analyzed using a business-accepted electronic spreadsheet for ease

Their tails are long, and their back paws are large and have 5 pads. Their teeth are sharp, and they use them for gnawing.
The Florida mouse is nocturnal and is active throughout the year except on unusually cold nights. The mouse can climb but is primarily a terrestrial species. They communicate by emitting high pitched squeals, and when they are excited, they thump the ground with their front paws producing a drumming sound. The Florida mouse also has a distinctive odor, almost like a skunk. A baby of a Florida mouse is called a pinkie, kitten, or pup. The females are called doe and males buck. A Florida mouse group is called a nest, colony, harvest, horde, or mischief.
The Florida mouse is an omnivore, and its diet consists of acorns when available, insects, seeds, nuts, fungi, crickets, ticks, fruit, berries, and other plant material and vertebrates. A 1987 report indicates the mouse feeds on engorged ticks (
Ornithodorus turicata americanus
) that parasitize gopher frogs (
Rana areolata
) and gopher tortoises.

They then return to the water to breed and deposit eggs.
Adult dragonflies will eat any insect as long as they can catch it. Dragonfly nymphs live in the water, and they usually wait on aquatic vegetation.
From the nymph stage to the adult stage, the dragonfly has a significant, positive ecological impact. Dragonfly eggs are laid and hatched in or near water, so their lives impact both water and land ecosystems. Once hatched, dragonfly nymphs can breathe underwater, and they use a motion similar to jet propulsion to move through their environment. This enables them to eat harmful aquatic organisms such as mosquito larvae. The nymph will continue contributing to this ecosystem for one to five years before becoming a mature adult. The adult dragonfly has enormous compound eyes that are useful in searching for flying insects. While flying, it uses its six legs to scoop food out of the air. Clasping the prey in its front legs, it then eats the insect in flight.
Dragonflies play ecological roles not only as predators but also as prey of birds, frogs, and other creatures. The presence of dragonflies indicates freshwater. One of the most useful dragonfly facts is that they reside low in the food chain, so a scientific study of their numbers and their health can reveal changes in water ecosystems more quickly than studying other animals or plants. Some national parks are beginning to use this species to survey and document the health of the park's water ecosystems. Since dragonflies eat mosquitoes and other insects, they help gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts. This also helps the environment because it allows humans to reduce the u.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Statistics is accurately defined as the study of the analysis, data collection, and organization of the data which is interpreted by a particular business field. 2) What is the importance of statistics in business decision making? Describe a business situation where statistics was used in making a decision. 3) The yield on a 30-year treasury note at the end of each year since 1990 is recorded below. Compute a five-year (1) moving average and (2) weighted moving average using weights of .1, .1, .2, .3, and .3, respectively. Please: (1) construct a scatter diagram -- be sure you choose the correct dependent and independent variable. Think about these questions: Which variable influences the other?
