This document provides a foreword for a revised edition of the textbook "Fundamental English 1". It explains that the textbook has been revised with almost every unit in Part B being updated. Students are advised to study according to their English level, as not every page needs to be studied in detail. The author thanks his colleague Dr. Donald A. Leuschel for his advice and criticism on the revisions.

The world's oceans are so vast that they can cope with the present levels of pollution. However, little is known about the long-term effects of such slow poisoning. The most serious problem of modern time is that man is destroying the earth's natural resources and transforming huge areas into waste land. As a result, it is becoming extremely difficult to grow enough to feed the world's rapidly increasing population. A way of protecting all wild life on the earth must also be found as many species are in danger of disappearing completely from the face of the earth. The smoke in the atmosphere, for example, is increasing so much that the amount of sunlight has been reduced in many cities. Man's whole environment is being changed in a serious way.

7. FOREWORD
This is a revised version of Fundamental English 1 which was
first published in 1971 and was minimally revised in later impressions.
A major revision was made of Unit 5 of Part A in the 1976 impression.
In this new edition, almost every unit of Part B has been revised.
Many vocabulary items have been replaced by new ones which seem
more appropriate.
Students are advised to study this book in accordance with their
achievement in English. Those who are good in English at the M.S. 5
level need not study every page of the book : they may study the
grammatical rules and some examples, do a few Items in the exercises,
and study the grammar of correct usage, which is very useful for some
finer points of English structure. Students are advised not to memorize
all the vocabulary items appearing in Part B; however, words with
high frequency should be given more attention.
The author wishes to express his sincere thanks to his very good
friend and colleague, Dr. Donald A. Leuschel, for his valuable advice
and criticism.

8. FOREWORD
This volume aims to provide the essential grounding that nor+
native speaken of English need in order to master the four basic skills
--iistening, reading, speaking, and writing. It does not pretend to COYCI
everything in a single volume, but it should present enough English
structure and vocabulary leading to the skills needed. It also includes
certain features of the English language that are not commonly d&t
with in other textbooks. The term ‘ruie’ used in this book is nor intended
to mean a strict prescribed guide for usage but rather a guidelino for
Ipractical usage.
The author has adopted the “Programmed Instruction Technique””
to a certain extent to help students who prefer to do their study inde;.xri
dently and those who cimld not attend classes regularly. Part A laya
8. basis for English structure that many Thai students have difficulties with.
Part B deals with vocabulary which most first year university students
should know. Each unit corresponds to each week of study. Thus,
in one week, one unit of Part A and the same unit of Part B must la
ampleted.
The author is very grateful to his good friend. Mr. David L. I,onde.
who helped in reading the proofs, checking errors and who gave many
fruitful suggestions end criticisms.

350. In September 1797, three hunters captured 1 boy about twelve
years of age 2 the Caune Woods in France. The 3 in Paris were
greatly interested in 4 boy, who had apparently lived most 5 his life
without human companionship. Some 6 imagined they would see
man in 7 most natural and noble state. Others 8 to hear the boy
speak the 9 “unlearned” language of man, which they 10 would
most likely be Hebrew. What 11 saw, however, was a dirty creature
12 scratched and bit, jumped about, and 13 noises like an animal.
Dr. Pinel, 64 specialized in treating mental disorders examined 15
boy and announced that he was 16 idiot and would not likely be 17
by any kind of training.
Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard, 18 young doctor. was convinced,
however, that 19 boy pould be helped. since he 20 that his low
intelligence was caused 21 his solitary life in the woods 22 about the
age of seven and 23 his ignorance of language. Itard took 24 boy
and worked with him 25 five years. Victor, as Itard called him, 26
not learn to speak French, but 27 was able to understand a large 28
of written words and phrases. I-Ie 29 obey simple written commands
and could 30 word cards to show his desires. 31 also acquired the
manners and appearance 32 a civilized young man. Victor had 33
been helped by education, but Itard 34 concluded that Victor could
not be 35 improved because his intelligence was subnormal.

355. Two years ago I stood here 1 newly-elected president and
stated that I 2 fully aware of my own limitations 3 had no intention
of competing with 4 of my great predecessors in office. 5 expressed
complete confidence that the administration 6 starting and now ending
would fully 7 up to our high standards. 1 8 that confidence upon
the assistance 1 9 certain would come from the former 10, the officers,
the committees, and above 11 from the membership. My confidence
has 12 fully justified. Thanks to all, the 13 have recorded a steady
rise in 14 power and prestige of this 15. Each month has been
marked by 16 steady and healthy rise in our 17 .
Now I come to the end 18 the road. The friendly cooperation
and 19 warm comradeship of all of you 20 dispelled the difficulties;
the path proved 21 pleasant one, and the two years, 22 me, were
memorable and happy. You 23 answered promptly and wholeheartedly
every call 24 made upon you for service. The 2!5 years have
heartened me with their 26 experiences. They have brought me 27
new and wonderful friendships which are 28 among my most cherished
possessions. My 29 thanks then to all of my 39 members as 1 step
back into 31 ranks to serve under one whose 32 of accomplishments
ensures us that under 33 leadership our beloved association will go 34
