This document describes a novel ultrawideband (UWB) printed antenna that exhibits dual complementary behavior. It can function as either a frequency notched UWB antenna or a narrowband antenna based on different combinations of split ring resonators (SRRs) and metallic strips loaded on the feed line. Simulation and measurement results on three prototype antenna configurations validate that loading SRRs produces a frequency notch response, while adding metallic strips transforms it into a narrowband response at the SRR resonance frequency. Shorting the SRR splits restores the original UWB response. The antenna provides tunability of the narrowband frequency by varying the SRR dimensions.
