Geographical indications (GIs) refer to indications of quality, reputation or characteristics of goods that are attributable to their geographical origin. GIs must be registered in the class and region to which they belong. An application for registration must be filed containing details about how the GI designates goods originating from a territory due to specific qualities. Once filed, the application is examined, advertised for opposition, and if approved, registered for an initial 10-year term that can be extended. Registration provides the right to take action against infringement, which can occur through unauthorized use of a GI or use that misleads consumers about a good's true origin.
