Why is DWPA a problem?
• Diffuse pollution is really a series of small point
sources
• Each of which must be addressed to achieve a
measureable improvement
• Land managers need encouragement and proof
to implement cost‐saving pollution reduction
measures
• Best addressed by an Integrated Catchment
Approach

Why is DWPA a problem?
• Water Framework Directive requires all Water
Bodies to reach GES by 2015
• EA draft RBMPs list diffuse pollution as a
problem in all River Basin Districts
• Sediment, nutrient and chemical pollution are
inextricably linked
