Mr. Jarod Yong from SMK Katibas presented activities from his low-proficiency English language classrooms in a rural Sarawak setting. He described the location and environment of SMK Katibas and the students. The presentation discussed a hypothesis that students can better understand materials produced by their peers. It then described three peer-to-peer activities carried out: a pen pal letter writing project, show and tell presentations, and an illustrated storytelling project. Examples of students' work from these activities were shown.
Conquering Negative Associations to English at Teach For Malaysia's The Summi...Jarod Yong
Jarod Yong presented his strategy for conquering negative associations with English among students at his school, SMK Katibas. His objective was to motivate students, get them actively using and practicing English, and improving their exam results. He faced apparent obstacles like low English proficiency, poor exam results, negative attitudes, and an inhospitable learning environment. His strategy involved shifting the school culture to be more supportive, winning over teachers and administrators, recruiting a team of students, implementing engaging activities, and assessing success through improved exam results and excitement about English. He encouraged other educators to develop their own plans to promote English in their schools.
