This document provides instructions for a broad-based assignment in Art and Design. Candidates must complete supporting studies in response to one question from a list provided. These supporting studies and an 8-hour controlled test will be assessed together out of 100 marks. Candidates are advised to research from primary sources and demonstrate ideas, exploration, organization, selection of materials, personal vision, and writing skills in their work. The assignment allows flexibility in scheduling the controlled test while work is assessed against objectives concerning investigation, idea development, visual relationships, skills, and response.

Research is a process of inquiry about problems that do not have immediate solutions. The world is full
of problems that require research-informed solutions. The purpose of research in business and
management contexts is to inform action and decision-making, while enhancing knowledge on how best
to address problems emerging in organisations. A systematic investigation is required through
qualitative and/or quantitative methodology in order to generate results (primary or secondary data) that
can help to inform actions and decision-making. The choice of appropriate methods for data collection
(e.g interviews and questionnaires) and data analysis is critical in order to produce useful information
and knowledge which is applicable for the organisation and other settings. High quality research
findings have implications for policy, practice and further research. Publishing results from research
studies in secondary sources such as books, journal articles business reports and on-line based
sources make it easier for the global community to access useful information and knowledge needed for
decision-making in business and management contexts (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2009).

Pursuing a research project will be a challenging and rewarding experience. This opportunity enables
you to carry out an in-depth original study on a topic of interest.
In this module, you are expected to develop skills of independent inquiry and critical analysis by
undertaking a research investigation on topic of interest within a business, management or
organisational context. You will be required to think about a problematic issue or problem in an
organisation that you want to investigate and conduct primary and secondary research accordingly, in
order to produce findings that should be analysed and clearly presented using appropriate methods.

Foundation Studies in Studio is an introduction to the importance of content and context in the making of contemporary
art. You will be expected to draw on a variety of methods/practices and to mine your own experiences to create works.
Readings, presentations, gallery visits and class discussions will provide a foundation for your investigations.
Along with content/context and methods/practice, the goals of this course are to challenge your preconceptions about art;
to help you develop a rigorous, independent work ethic; and to teach you to develop a critical eye and a sophisticated art
vocabulary. You will be given a series of projects that are designed to challenge you and your imagination. Finding
creative solutions to these projects may take more time and thought than you are accustomed to putting into art projects.
You will not be given examples of how to solve assignments because the point is to learn how to find your own solutions
to the problems. Don’t panic. Open your mind. Learn to take chances. Learn to experiment. Be sure to remember to
use library resources, as well as the Internet to do research. Foundation Studies in Studio is intended to prepare you for
further study in Studio.
