Iddat is a period of waiting observed by Muslim women after the dissolution of their marriage through death or divorce. During this period, a woman cannot remarry to determine if she is pregnant, avoiding confusion over paternity. The iddat period is 4 months and 10 days if a woman is pregnant upon her husband's death. For divorce, it is three menstrual cycles, three months if a woman does not menstruate, or until delivery if pregnant. A woman must observe certain restrictions during iddat like not wearing makeup or leaving home without necessity. She is also entitled to maintenance from her ex-husband and payment of dower.
