Collection
of Data
G7 MATHEMATICS
Data are
collection of facts
or information.
Data may be gathered by
using the following method:
1. Conducting surveys
2. Observing the outcome of events
3. Taking measurements in
experiments
4. Reading Statistical Publications
1.Conducting Surveys
Surveys may be conducted through face-to-face interviews,
telephone inquiries, and self-completed questionnaires that
are returned by mail or completed online.
The Interview Method is done when a
person solicits information from
another person. The person gathering
the data is called the interviewer, while
the person supplying the data is called
the interviewee.
Interview Method
If the survey involves a series of
questions, the interview will be a
very tedious one to employ.
Hence, the Questionnaire Method
is advisable.
Questionnaire Method
They are used to collect
information like personal
favorites as shown in the
following example:
Not all surveys gather information
about people. There are surveys about
cars, buildings and etc.
We can use direct observation to collect data from daily
life such as the following:
2. Observing Outcomes of Events
a. The number of cars
passing through a certain
junction between 7:00 AM
to 8:00 AM
b. The number of passengers
in a queue for counter service
at an airport.
In science and quality control, we often collect data by
conducting experiments to take measurements of
particular objects of interest.
3. Taking Measurements in Experiments
a. Bacteria count in a culture b. The lifetime of battery can
be tested in a quality-control
laboratory.
Some data related to economic conditions and the population of a country are
obtained by large scale surveys that cannot be done by an individual or a small
firm. We can obtain these types of data from official statistics published by the
government.
4. Reading Statistical Publication
a. The National Statistics Office of the
Philippines has a useful website that
provides reliable and up-to-date Philippine
statistics at https://psa.gov.ph/
b. Crime statistics from Philippine
National Police can be found at
https://pnp.gov.ph/
