Teaching Tip
The concept of a plot structure may be new to your
students. I would explain the different elements of the
plot using an example. I have included a video here
about Aladdin's plot structure. After showing this
video and explaining the different plot elements, I
would then go through the story of the 'Three Little
Pigs', getting the students to try and figure out the
plot elements.
What are the
plot elements
of Aladdin?

1
Objective: To make connections between key elements of the story as well as help
students visualize the context in which the selected snapshot takes place.
MAJOR component should be covered more thoroughly than minor components.
They will be indicated with a star next to the story element part.
1 Connect – Note the story element (Beneficial Skepticism) and the relevant
part that will be covered (Overwork).
A media card is provided to contextualize vocabulary.
2 Context I – Briefly discuss the setting and characters involved in the
upcoming snapshot. Students can touch the circles to reveal relevant
expressions.

Teaching Tip
For the connect section, you need to make sure that
students understand the vocabulary. For example, I
would give examples of being unprepared for class and
then ask the students to give examples of times that they
were unprepared for their classes.
Teaching Tip
For the Context I section, I will ask a student where is the
story taking place. Is this class similar to your class? I
would also ask students to draw their classes on a
drawing quiz. I will then show the vocabulary and ensure
they understand the meaning. Then we would discuss the
characters involved in this section of the book and what
they might get up to. After this, I will give students 5
minutes to fill the blanks for context I and II.
Activity: Draw your
class room and
compare it to the
class room in the
picture. Is it similar
or different?
V1 Mega lesson 1
Act I, part 1: MAJOR
Objective: To help students move beyond comprehension of the text towards a
deeper understanding of the subtext.
3 Text – Use the text to guide students to the section of the novel being
covered.
4 Context II – Guide students to answer the subsequent questions based on
the scanning question excerpts.
5 Subtext – Elicit student answers and justifications to the Subtext question.
Then discuss the connection to the included fine art piece.
Teaching Tip
For context II, I would suggest reading the book
in class and discussing different parts of the
story as a class. You want the students to think
about any underlying messages or meanings in
the book. You also want them to be able to
analyse and understand a text, not just read it.
Ask different students to read a few paragraphs
at a time. You can also assign character roles to
each reader.
If Brian is unprepared
for class, what can
imply about his
character?
Is it normal to be
unprepared for class
sometimes? Why or
why not?
V1 Mega lesson 1
Act I, part 2: MAJOR
Objective: To make connections between key elements of the story as well as help
students visualize the context in which the selected snapshot takes place.
MAJOR component should be covered more thoroughly than minor components.
They will be indicated with a star next to the story element part.
1 Connect – Note the story element (Thinking Ahead) and the relevant part
that will be covered (Personal Goals).
A media card is provided to contextualize vocabulary.
2 Context I – Briefly discuss the setting and characters involved in the

Teaching Tip
Sometimes there is a lot to cover in V1, especially when
the students are engaged and speaking a lot during the
class. I would suggest that instructors definitely cover the
starred story elements in the story map.

Act I-III: Literary Lesson 10min
Objective: To teach students a liMegary skill and have them apply it to what they
have close read in all three acts.
1 Give a brief lesson on the given skill-using imagery.
Media is provided to better visualize imagery.
2 Have students apply the skill in the exercise below. Utilize capture/SRS to
confirm student digestion and facilitate discussion.
3 Confirm student understanding of imagery by having them answer and
justify the question. (NOTE that some lessons may not have an answer)
Teaching Tip
Students might not understand the meaning of
characteristic. So I would suggest giving an example
character and their characteristic. For example,
Batman is brave, honourable etc. As an activity, I
would then ask students to describe their own
characteristic and also get them to draw their friends
who have similar characteristics to the book's
characters.
V1 Mega lesson 1
