The document summarizes a training workshop on implementing the Common Core State Standards. It discusses the organization of the ELA standards, including strands, anchor standards, and grade-specific standards. It also covers differences from the previous standards, text complexity, and challenges in changing instructional practices to align with the new standards.
The document summarizes a training on implementing the Common Core State Standards. It discusses the goals of building collaboration among teachers and focusing on 21st century skills. Key points covered include an overview of the Common Core, its goals of establishing consistent standards across states, and how it represents a shift toward preparing students for college and careers through higher-order thinking.
The document discusses the Common Core State Standards and their implications for instruction. It notes that the standards emphasize rigorous content, higher-order thinking skills, and preparation for college and careers. They represent a shift towards more non-fiction and informational texts. Teachers will need to focus more on careful text selection and analysis, using both quantitative and qualitative measures. There is also increased emphasis on argumentative writing and having students support claims with evidence from texts. This represents changes for teacher preparation programs and professional development.
- The webinar focused on the CCGPS for kindergarten mathematics unit 1 on counting with friends.
- The big idea of unit 1 is developing a deep understanding of quantity, relationships among numbers, and representation of number.
- Resources and tools for teaching number sense such as dot cards, number cubes, and collections were discussed.
The document discusses the need for school literacy plans to align with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It notes that while standards, plans, and assessments have been created, classroom instruction is what most directly impacts student learning. It then provides background information on the CCSS, including the subjects and grades they cover, new terminology, and how the standards are organized. The document outlines the shifts in emphasis between reading different text types and writing under the CCSS. It also discusses text complexity, vocabulary development, and tools for measuring reading levels. The overarching message is that district and school literacy plans should leverage the CCSS to strengthen classroom literacy instruction.
Aligning Teaching, Learning, and Assessment with Student Learning Outcomes in...Cynthia Wiseman
This document summarizes a three-part workshop on aligning teaching, learning, and assessment with student learning outcomes in the Common Core. The workshop introduces the Common Core standards, provides a template for developing lesson plans aligned to the standards, and examines assessments related to the Common Core. It discusses identifying learning outcomes, choosing complex texts, and creating tasks that engage students and require critical thinking skills. The document also overview PARCC assessments and how they are designed to reward high-quality instruction aligned with the standards, focusing on complex texts, evidence-based reading and writing, and building knowledge through nonfiction.
This document provides a summary of a webinar about the first grade CCGPS mathematics unit on creating routines using data. The webinar focused on the big ideas, standards, and examples for the unit. It also discussed tools for developing number sense, examples for assessment, and a list of resources for teaching the CCGPS. The presenter emphasized developing a deep understanding of quantity, relationships among numbers, and representations of number.

This document provides an overview of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It begins with an introduction to the CCSS, explaining that they describe the knowledge and skills students should have in English Language Arts and Math from kindergarten through 12th grade. It then discusses why the standards are important for establishing clear expectations for student learning. The document reviews which states have adopted the CCSS and the timeline for implementation. It also addresses common myths about the CCSS and provides facts to dispel these myths. Finally, it examines how the CCSS relate to specific subject areas like English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and assessments like the PARCC exams.
This document provides an overview of a professional development session on implementing a holistic rubric for scoring extended responses based on the Common Core State Standards. The session aims to build teacher capacity for literacy instruction across all subjects by exploring the research on the benefits of writing and practicing scoring sample essays using the rubric. Key points include that writing improves learning, common guidelines for writing assignments aid instruction, and the CCSS demand increased literacy skills and critical thinking.
This document discusses the Common Core State Standards and their focus on preparing students for college and careers. It notes that the CCSS aim to align K-12 education standards across states to ensure students acquire broad skills needed for employment or higher education. The standards emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and real-world application over rote memorization. The document outlines several ways the CCSS will make curriculum more rigorous, such as increasing the complexity of texts students read and the use of evidence-based writing. It also discusses tools and resources available to help educators implement the new standards.
Fostering Engagement with Team-Based Learning (TBL) in Larger Japanese Univer...Brent Jones
This document summarizes an action research project that explored implementing team-based learning (TBL) in large university classes in Japan. The study involved 56 students taking a culture-focused English course. Key findings from individual and team readiness assurance tests, reflective writing assignments, and peer assessments suggested that TBL had some benefits for learning outcomes, though designing and delivering TBL presented challenges in this context. The presentation concludes by discussing takeaways regarding keeping student groups consistent, mixed results on improved learning, and the viability of applications activities for TBL in large Japanese university classes.
This document discusses strategies for effective information literacy instruction for upper-level students. It covers faculty outreach, instructional design using the ADDIE model, classroom teaching techniques, and assessment. The document emphasizes adapting instruction to higher-order thinking skills as students progress beyond introductory levels.
The document outlines a tentative timeline and plan for rolling out the Common Core State Standards across subject areas in a school district from 2010-2013. It discusses introducing the new standards in certain subject areas like math and English while continuing to teach the current state standards in other areas. It also describes several professional development activities for teachers focusing on comprehending informational texts, the 8 mathematical practices, and anchoring the standards.

More than 40 states and territories joined one of the K–
12 comprehensive assessment consortia, the
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)
or the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
A common set of college- and career-readiness
standards by states means that by 2014–15, more than
80 percent of U.S. public school students and teachers
will be focusing on the same content standards.
Assessment systems should develop assessment and
reporting tools that:
•balance summative, interim and formative testing

There are 12 shifts that the Common Core requires of us if we are to be truly aligned with it in terms of curricular materials and classroom instruction. There are 6 shifts in Mathematics and 6 shifts in ELA/Literacy. Malcolm ELA 1-4 Brandy ELA 5-6 Students read a true balance of informational and literary texts. Students build knowledge about the world (domains/ content areas) through TEXT rather than the teacher or activities Students read the central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient, create more time and space and support in the curriculum for close reading. Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text.
Writing emphasizes use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument. Students constantly build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex texts. This can be done effectively by spiraling like content in increasingly complex texts. Teachers significantly narrow and deepen the scope of how time and energy is spent in the math classroom. They do so in order to focus deeply on only the concepts that are prioritized in the standards. Principals and teachers carefully connect the learning within and across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years.
