How to monitor unknown third party code? One of the hardest challenges we face running Clever Cloud, apart from the impressive scale we face with hundreds of new applications per week, is the monitoring of unknown tech stacks. The first goal of rebuilding the monitoring platform was to accommodate the immutable infrastructure pattern that generates lots of ephemeral hosts every minute. The traditional approach is to focus on VMs or hosts, not applications. We needed to shift this into an approach of auto-discovery of metrics to monitor, allowing third party code to publish new items. This talk explains our journey in building Clever Cloud Metrics stack, heavily based on Warp10 (Kafka/Hadoop/Storm based) to deliver developer efficiency and trustability to our clients applications.

In this talk, we will talk about promises/futures, one of the concurrency models that has risen to the occasion. We will look at what they are, how they're implemented and used in Java and Javascript. We will see how Scala, with its functional paradigm and greater abstraction capabilities, avoids "callback hell" typically associated with the model, allows writing of concurrent code in "direct style", and thereby greatly reduces the cognitive burden, allowing you to focus on application logic better.

AWS Sydney Summit 2013 - Technical Lessons on How to do DR in the Cloud
1. The document discusses backup and disaster recovery (DR) lessons learned from implementing backup and DR solutions using AWS for Ausenco Limited. It provides definitions of archiving, backup, and DR.

Canonical AWS Summit London 2011
Canonical is the company behind the Ubuntu operating system which has over 20 million users. Nick Barcet from Canonical gave a presentation about how Ubuntu and AWS can benefit each other. Ubuntu One is Canonical's personal cloud service that allows users to access and sync files across devices. It relies on AWS S3 for storage and EC2 for the Ubuntu Test Drive, which lets users try Ubuntu without downloading or installing anything. Canonical also uses AWS for testing servers under heavy loads and developing new technologies in order to reduce hardware costs and inventory issues.
AWS Summit 2011: Customer Presentation - NYTimes
The New York Times migrated many of their online services to AWS to gain scalability, flexibility and cost savings. They moved their archives site, TimesMachine, to AWS using S3, EC2 and Hadoop to host over 400,000 objects and 4TB of data. Their Skimmer prototype was deployed to production on AWS within an hour by launching additional EC2 instances. They now use AWS for over 40% of their infrastructure, saving on operational costs, and are exploring multi-AZ and multi-region capabilities to improve availability.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
