Going green is not just the adult thing to do.
Children around the world are getting
involved with hundreds of activities to help save the Earth. Whether living in the
city or in a rural community, children can aid in saving the planet by performing
simple duties in their homes, communities and schools. Some activities might
require a bit of assistance from adults, while others might require a bit of adult
encouragement to get the children interested.
Step 1:
Encourage children to unplug toys and lights in
their rooms and turn off lights throughout the
house when not in use.
Step 2:
Help kids separate recyclable material into
different containers according to the
material. Label large garbage containers
with separate words like "Glass,"
"Plastic," "Paper" and "Aluminum".
Step 3:
Get your kids involved in composting to reduce
the waste in landfills and prevent harm to
animals. Build a compost bin in your backyard
and have kids help to fill the compost bin with
organic wastes such as grass clippings, fruit and
vegetable peels and non-meat food scraps and
leftovers.

Step 4:
Start a toy trade program in your community.
Instead of spending money on new toys made of
materials such as metal and plastic, try getting
kids in your family and community to trade toys.
Trading toys prevents old toys from ending up
in landfills. In addition to this, have your kids
help save the planet by donating old toys instead
of throwing them away.
Step 5:
Encourage children to use cloth towels and
sponges to clean up messes instead of using
paper towels and napkins. This reduces the
amount paper you use and helps to save
trees.
Step 6:
Teach children to throw away garbage when driving,
walking outdoors or playing on the playground. Instead of
teaching your children to throw trash onto the ground,
teach your children that trash belongs in a receptacle. If
possible, teach your children to pick up other peoples'
garbage and place that in receptacles as well.
Step 7:
Shorten shower times and lower bathtub water levels to
teach children to save the planet by conserving water.
Teach kids that they do not need to spend hours playing in
the tub or standing under the shower head, and you will
save money on your water bill, and your kids will help
save the Earth at the same time.
