2. It is a muscular organ.
Situated on the floor of the mouth or oral
cavity.
Attached by muscle to - Hyoid bone
- Mandible
- Styloid process
- Pharynx
Function :- (i) Taste
(ii) Mastication
(iii) Swallowing
(iv) Speaking
3.
4. Lining epithelium :- Stratified Squamous
Epithelium.
SULCUS TERMINALIS :- It is a V-shaped
depression dividing
tongue into-
1)Ant. 2/3 or Oral part
2) post. 1/3 or Pharyngeal part
5. Surfaces :-
(A) Dorsal surface :- Free
(B) Ventral surface :-
Ant. – Free
Post.- Attached to floor of oral cavity
Tongue made up of mainly skeletal muscle &
C.T.. Muscles arranged in 3 directions.
6. Irregular numerous projections on dorsal
surface of the tongue.
Types :-
(a) Filiform papillae
(b) Fungiform papillae
(c) Circumvallet papillae
(d) Foliate papillae
7. 1. Filiform papillae :- Smallest papillae.
- Epithelium keratinized.
- Sharply pointed.
- Small and Conical shaped.
- No taste bud.
8. Function :- Mechanical breaking of food
material.
New Concept (by Professor Oxnard):- It
also helps in cleaning of teeth.
9. 2. Fungiform papilla :- (Mushroom like)
- Broader, larger, taller and club shaped.
- Non- keratinized.
- Occurs in space b/w Filiform papillae.
- Taste buds present(few).
- Helps to manipulate the food.
10. 3. Circumvallet :- Largest papillae
- Ant. to sulcus terminalis.
- Least in no. (8-12)
11. - Characterized by deep furrows or moats.
- “Serous(von Ebner) gland” or “Rinsing
Gland” empty their serous secretion into
base of furrow.
- Numerous taste buds present.
12. 4. Foliate papillae :-
- Poorly developed on humans
- If present, found along post.
and lat. border of tongue.
13. Barrel shaped bodies.
Embedded within epithelium of papillae
(except Filiform papillae)
14. Types of cells found :-
1. Sustentacular/supporting cells
2. Taste/Gustatory cells
3. Basal cells
Taste pores : Openings of bud onto the
surface.
15.
16. Four basic taste sensations:- sour
- salt
- bitter
- sweet.
17. Post. 1/3rd behind sulcus terminalis.
Has numerous lymphatic tissues.
Lingual tonsil : collections of lymphoid
tissues.
No keratinization.
Absence of filiform and fungiform papillae.
18. Histology of tongue is very important for
diagnosis of carcinoma of tongue.
Treated by :- Radiotherapy.
- Surgery.
