2. In Railway wagon as well as in passengers cars the
braking system plays a very important role to stop
the train, to maintain the speed of the train within
specific limit.
A moving train contains energy known as Kinetic
Energy, which needs to be removed from the train in
order to cause it to stop. The simplest way of doing
this is to convert the kinetic energy to heat energy
by applying brakes. The wheels slow down and
eventually the train stops.

17. Most air brake systems have an
“emergency” position on the driver
brake valve. This position dumps the
brake pipe air quickly. Although the
maximum amount of air which can be
obtained in the brake cylinder does not
vary on a standard air brake system.
The rate of application is faster in
“emergency”.
EMERGENCY AIR BRAKE
18. A vacuum brake is a braking system employed
on trains and introduced in the 1860s. A
variant, the automatic vacuum brake system,
became almost universal in British train
equipment and in countries influenced by
British practice. Vacuum brakes also enjoyed a
brief period of adoption in the United States,
primarily on narrow-gauge railroads. Its
limitations caused it to be progressively
superseded by compressed air systems
starting in the United Kingdom from the 1970s
onwards. The vacuum brake system is now
obsolete; it is not in large scale usage
anywhere in the world, other than in South
Africa, largely supplanted by air brakes.
