This document provides an overview of transportation development in Batam City, Indonesia. It discusses the rapid population and economic growth that has increased vehicle ownership and congestion. Plans are outlined to develop an integrated transportation system including expanding public transit options like BRT corridors and potential future rail lines. Statistics on current public transportation ridership and fleets are also presented. The management of the Trans Batam public transit system is described, including operational details and fleet expansion plans to improve services for the growing city.
2. I. PROFILE OF BATAM
Batam City as a main ”Free Trade Zone”, is developing rapidly. Especially in industrial
and tourism areas in Riau Islands. As a center of development among its surrounding areas,
Batam City needs to be prepared, and becomes a convinient place, attracted investors and
tourists both foreign and domestic.
Program in transportation sector in the batam is expected to make use of public transport
and non-motorized transport becomes the main choice for most of the road users. Therefore,
could make Batam to be environmentally friendly city, beautiful, convenient fresh, and green

5. Geographically, Batam City has strategic
position since it lays on international
shipping line and only 12.5 sea miles
separated to Singapore.
With area of 426.563 Ha which is divided
into 318.298 Ha of sea and 108.265 Ha of
land

11. In general, transportation services system in Batam are directed to intergrated
mode, which are conjoined air with land mode and sea with land mode yet stil
need to be developed. Therefore, accessibility of services will become more
convinient and safer.
For land transportation, in regard of rapid growth of economic and population
which induce the increase of motor-vehicles ownership, transportation facilities
development plan, especially public transport will be much focused in
developing mass-rapid transport which are reliable and fast, better
management and control system, which at the end will be reducing traffic
congestion in the city.

planned the development of inner
road toll in Batam city which will
cover:
• Batu Ampar- Muka Kuning Industrial
Estate;
• Muka Kuning Intersection - Hang
Nadim Airport;
• Kabil Roundabout – Batam Bridge -
Tanjung Sauh – Bintan Island;
• Muka Kuning Industrial Estate –
Galang Island.
The development of this road toll
will connect aiport transportation
and seaport nodes which serve

the study, Batam may develop rail system in:
