2. NEED
Source of water get contaminated (River, sub surface
water)
– Due to human activities (rapid industrialization)
– It absorb some harmful gases from atmosphere
– Some minerals gets dissolve in large quantity
To make drinking water free from pathogens and other
impurities.

3. Methods of treatment of water
• Screening
– Provided in front of pumps of intake
structure
– Excludes tree, animals, debris,
branches, bushes
• Types of Screening
– Coarse
– Fine

4. • Sedimentation (type I or Plain
sedimentation)
– SS (sp. Gravity more than 1)
– Still water helps to settle down
Sedimentation (Sedimentation and
coagulation or type II)
– Fine SS particles does not settle down in plain
sedimentation
– Size of particles is increased by adding
chemical (coagulant)
– It forms gelatinous precipitate (Floc)
– It attracts & absorbs fine SS particles

5. • Filtration
– Further removal of
particles and bacteria
– Filter bed of sand and
gravels are used
• Types of Filters
– Slow sand filters
– Rapid sand filters
– Pressure filters

6. • Disinfection/Sterilization
– To kill disease causing bacteria
(Disinfection)
– Chemical used for Disinfection
(Disinfectant)
