Importance of Youth in Politics
1. [Shivanand Hulyalkar]: Importance of Youth in Politics
Can a democracy dominated by political leaders above the age of 60 be called a "dynamic
economy"? Are the "experienced" leaders of such a great nation really that open to embrace
new technology? Is a nation whose youth takes little interest in politics truly on the path to
becoming a developed economy? The answer to these questions is- probably not. There is a
probability and possibility, however, that the odds may turn out in our favor if the youth
begins to actively involve and engage in the Indian political scenario, says Mr. Shivanand
Hulyalkar, a Congress leader from Pune.
We are a nation who has always been voting for senior leaders at the helm due to the fact that
they are well-versed with the political environment and have the capability to take the right
strategic decisions. No doubt we have progressed a lot in the last 62 years but the
development pace would have been completely different had some young torchbearers led
this process of development. Mr. Shivanand Hulyalkar opines, "History is a witness to
Gandhi urging the youth to actively participate in the freedom movement. The country
desperately needs some young leaders like Rahul Gandhi who personify energy, enthusiasm,
morality, and diligence. But there is a need for more young citizens, not only those belonging
to influential political families but also those coming from diverse backgrounds and financial
situations, to come forward for the sake of crafting the destiny of developing India."
The importance of youth participation in politics cannot be overemphasized. Accordingly, he
urges the ruling government to undertake steps to encourage youth to enter politics. So far,
hardly have such initiatives been taken to train the young generation to handle the affairs of
their state and country. This needs to be started from the grassroots level that is advancing
2. from local governance to state to national governance. The youth of modern India are aware
of the problems facing our country and the world at large. Given a chance they would be
ready to change the political condition of the country for better. One of the reasons the youth
have had disinterest in politics is that they are being denied opportunities due to lack of
experience despite possessing a lot of talent and potential within themselves. This reason
seems to be more logical seeing the monopoly of old leaders in almost all the major political
parties of the country. Old people should realize that proper development can take place only
when they make way for younger people to take control of the activities.
With young political icons like Rajiv Gandhi dedicatedly making an effort to understand the
problems of the common man, the youth is sure to take inspiration and proactively enter the
political scene, feels Mr. Shivanand Hulyalkar. The movie industry is doing its bit with
films like Youngistaan. It's time the Indian government did its bit too.
