There was an Italian study where people who had type-2 diabetes who adopted a Mediterranean diet that is rich in whole grains and vegetables with a minimum of 30 percent of daily-calories from fat (that too mostly from olive oil), were far better able to control and manage their diabetes without any medications for diabetes as compared to people who adopted a low-fat diet with less than 30 percent of calories coming from fat (less than ten percent from saturated fat).
