Why is the Past Important?
To many people the past is something that has already happened and therefore not worth keeping up with. Most people
are kept busy enough with daily events so that there is not time to worry about what has already happened anyway. The
thing many people, and especially young people, forget is that what happened yesterday can impact what happens today,
and this is most definitely true when we begin to consider our family. After all, family is one of the most important things in
our day to day lives. Things that affect them many times affect us in ways we may not be aware of immediately. The
purpose of this project is for you to begin to explore YOUR family's past, relationships, and the time period in which your
family members lived. After all it happened to them, and possibly changed their lives, which means it could very well have
changed yours.
This project will begin with Phase 1 with you collection information on family members and end with creating a video in
which YOU will tell their story in Phase 3. After all it's your story too, right.
Audience interaction:
The students will begin the project by referring to the home page of this site and reading about the progression of the
project. The page navigation has been selected so as to allow students to be able to return to a specific point in the
project regardless of the timeframe, i.e. the project will take at least three blocks and some work will be done at home as
well.

Gathering the Information
During the course of this project we will collect information about your family. The best way to get started is by conducting
interviews with older family members and questioning them about dates and events that they remember and family
members. After collecting the initial information and filling in a family tree we can begin collecting photographs and other
mementos that can be scanned using a scanner can also be done at this time. After we collect all the information we can
and scan the photos we can move on to gathering information about events that were occurring while your relatives were
living out their daily lives. Proceed to Phase 2 to begin researching the events that occurred during the lives of your family
members and see how it affected them.
Audience interaction:
Phase 1 is the beginning point and it is here that the information will begin to be collected. This project is designed to
include both oral histories from other family members and formal research to be undertaken in Phase 2. This is the point
where artifacts can also be collected for inclusion in the timeline. The purpose of the timeline is to exhibit events and time
in a logical and chronological sequence for visual examination by the student upon completion and will be completed in
Phase 2.

How Did Events Shape Their Daily Lives
Many things occur in the course of someone's life that can change it in ways we cannot imagine. Look at the past based
on the timeframe your family member was living and collect information on who was president and governor of the state
they lived in and find out what actions these leaders may have taken, or some other person of note. Using Discus, we can
also research events that occurred and shaped their lives at all levels, locally to nationally. When this is done start creating
a timeline with photos and any other digital articles at Dipity, which is a website for creating timelines.
Audience interaction:
Students will begin the process of collecting information based on the timeframes of individual family members. They will
find information about events occurring at all levels, locally to nationally and incorporate this information into the timeline
as well using Dipity, which can be exported and included into the final project.

Putting it All Together
Now that you have photographs, information, and a timeline it is time to create a video using Movie Maker and put it all
together in a story that you think should be told. Using scanned images, documents, or any digital files a video can be put
together with you narrating the story as you see it unfolding. Movie Maker also has the ability to include music that may be
meaningful to you, but remember to give credit and cite anything used in the video that is not your own creation. After it
has been assembled to your liking you can also go back and polish up the audio using Audacity along with any other
audio you wish to incorporate in the story. This is your story so make it one worth telling, and good luck.
Audience interaction:
Phase 3 is to be the assembly phase in which the students will pull all the resources together and organize them. The
artifacts will be introduced into Movie Maker as this is an application that is both readily available, and is installed on all
computers at Fairfield Central High School which made it a logical selection for this project. The students will also have
access to Audacity in order to further personalize and polish their project in that it is also installed on computers at school.

their personality and allows for their individual talents to be showcased along with the chronological sequence of their
family’s history.

How Did We Do?
Often you are not asked what you thought of a school assignment. This time it's different. I would really like to know if this
was a meaningful experience or not. So, when you have finished the project please take a few moments to answer a few
questions so that I can tell if this was a good or bad experience. The survey can be found here.
Audience interaction:
Phase 4 will guide the student to a survey to collect information about their experience with work on the project and to
ascertain whether they found it to be worthwhile.
