6. Chlorophyta
Green Algae
Genera = Nearly 350
Species = Nearly 20000 – 23000
Derived from Greek words ;
Chloro means Green , Phyco means Algae
Phyton means Plant

7. General Characters
Habitat ;
Most members are found in fresh water, some
are present in marine and terrstrial.
(Fresh water) (Marine)

8. Plant Body ;
 It has wide range of thallus.
 Cell is eukaryotic in nature.
 Their cell wall is made up of cellulose.
 Cell organelles are present in the cell.
Pigments ;
 Green pigments dominent.
( chlorophyll A and B are dominent )
 Phycobilion are absent in them.

9. Reserve food material is starch with pyrenoids.
They have autotropic mode of nutration.
Reproduction ;
The reproduce by three means :-
1) Vegetaive 2) Sexual 3) Asexual
Sexual reproduction takes place almost in all members
except Chlorococcales.
Zygote are oospore and it is diploid in nature.
Sexual reproduction may be isogamous ,
anisogamous and oogamus.

 These are world wide in distribution.
 Majorty of the species found in Asia , Australia ,
and North America.
 These are found in still and clear water.

15. Plant Body ;
 They are highly organized and elaborate
thalus.
 Thalus is eract and branched.
 The plant body is deposited with the lime which
makes them tough.

16. Reproduction ;
 Reproduction is occur only by two ways:
1) Vegetative 2) Sexual
 Asexual reproduction is absent in them.
 Vegetative reproduction takes place by
=> Amylum Stars
=> Bulbils
=> Secondary Protonema

18.  Sexual reproduction is oogamus.
 They have complex sex organs.
 Baciliated Sperms are present
 The Zygote germinates into protonema.
