2.  Photo therapy is the treatment which consist
of application of fluorescent light to the
infants with exposed skin.

3.  To bring down serum bilirubin level to
normal.

4.  Abnormal rise in bilirubin level
(more than 16 – 17mg on day4)

9.  Cause and severity of hyper bilirubinemia
 Light source, wave length in blue green spectrum
 The dose of phototherapy

 Surface area of body exposed
 Lining on sides of cot, that reflects phototherapy
light.

10.  Phototherapy unit
 Small cotton pad to use as eye bandage
 Two rolled sheets to put on either sides of
baby.

11.  Check temperature of baby
 Undress the baby
 Apply eye bandage
 Put the baby on phototherapy unit. At a
distance of 30 – 45 cm from light source.
 Place small pillows or rolled sheet on both
side for safety
 Turn the baby frequently to expose all the
body parts.

13.  Switch off the photo therapy machine
 Remove the eye pads from baby
 Check temperature
 Inspect baby for any signs of complication
 Give baby to mother

14.  Cover eyes and genitalia of baby, while on
phototherapy
 Daily check the bilirubin level
 Frequently change the position of child
 Turn off phototherapy lights for 2 to 5
minutes in an interval of at least 8 hours
 Monitor the number and consistency of
stools.
 Weigh the child daily
 Monitor intake and output of child
