Location of Incisions
Fractured vertebral body
(side view)
Your physician will make small incisions over the fracture site(s) on your back.
5. KYPHON® Balloon Kyphoplasty: Step-by-Step
Placement of Balloons
Balloon catheters are inserted into the incisions and into the body of the affected vertebra.
6. KYPHON® Balloon Kyphoplasty: Step-by-Step
Balloons are Inflated
The balloons are inflated with a liquid visible under X-ray guidance inside the collapsed vertebra.
This creates a cavity and helps restore the vertebra body height.
7. KYPHON® Balloon Kyphoplasty: Step-by-Step
Removal of Balloons and Filling of Cement
The physician then deflates and removes the balloons leaving an open cavity.
Bone cement is then inserted through the catheters into the open cavity.
8. KYPHON® Balloon Kyphoplasty: Step-by-Step
Internal Cast to Support and Stabilize
Once the cement is carefully in place the catheters are removed
and the cement hardens in minutes creating an “internal cast”.
