LOCATION DESCRIPTION
I lived in an apartment flat almost 17 years. For the
summertime, we have a summer house in Çanakkale but we are not
going anymore. These 2 places are where I lived at least 6
months. For this assignment, I am going to write about the
apartment flat in Çayhane Street, Çankaya, Ankara.
The apartment flat has 4 bedrooms, a small kitchen and a
living room, but no balcony or porches. For the general
perspective of the interior of the old-house, I can easily say
that the sun did not enter the house; it was very dark and
needs artificial lighting in every time of the day. It was
very old building and almost everything had broken while we
were living. We had to renovate all the rooms in a period of
time. (Please look at the Sketch 1 on page 10)
The first place that I remember is my room. At first, it was
used as “arka oda” where mom made ironing, the guests slept
and we put our miscellaneous goods. After the birth of my
brother, it became a room for his. However, it changed after a
while since I needed a place to study for the high school exam
(SBS) and finally I had an individual room where I can study
till midnight. Thus, the room affected me in a positive way
because I studied a lot and no-one interrupted me by sleeping
in same room but one thing that frustrated me was the amount
of daylight come in. My room was very dark and it needs more
2. 3.
lighting fixtures than the other rooms. Even in the morning, I
had to turn on the lights. It was not a very big deal for me
but a huge problem for the father (bills) and of course I
needed to turn on the lights at night time when everybody
slept and this affected mom since she is light sleeper and
affected by even a tiny glare.
When you entered the room the first thing that you came across
was the drawer. It was placed almost next to the door, so that
I cannot walk directly into the room, I needed to turn my body
to not to hit my finger on the corner of the drawer. Since the
room had used as my father’s changing room, there were lots of
suits. Next to the drawer, there was a huge wardrobe where a
less amount of my father’s suit put inside. It has yellow
cover and 2 wings and almost reaches at the ceiling. On the
upper side of the wardrope, there were 3 drawers, however,
their knobs had broken and we could not open the drawers. That
is the reason why we did not use the drawers at all times.
Even I did not recognize what was inside the drawers. At the
top of the wardrobe, there was a white-creamy saddlebag where
my mom’s “dantel, el örgüsü, iğne oyası, ceyiz” stuffs placed.
The other wall did not appear because of the built-in
furniture. Of course, the suits were put inside the built-in
closet as well. (Almost 100 suits, he used his room too.)The
closet has 3 different layers. For the first layer, there were
cupboard doors, and inside there were 3 drawers, (mostly used
3. 4.
as to put socks, ties, underwear and etc.) However, the
drawers had a huge problem since none of them opened properly.
They either had broken drawer slides or broken drawers. Also,
they did not have any knobs, only has curve at the middle of
it. In order to open the drawers, you have to put into your
hand inside the drawer and then pull. The second layer of the
closet was where the suits placed according to their color.
Basically, it started with the black-grey, continued with
indigo, then brown color. As a final layer, there were pillows
and quilts but the rightest cabinet door cannot open because
of the fibrous plaster cornices. Of course I had some personal
stuff such as my bed and a table for study. (Nothing more!)
The room was a little bit small because of the built-in
furniture thus; we cannot buy something from the market since
they did not suit inside the room. We should measure the
place, drew some sketches, went to “Siteler”, and ordered the
furniture to produce. My bed was different than the regular
beds. Before I moved to the room, the room used as guest room
as well, but then there were no place to accommodate to
guests. Thus, I had 2 layer of bed that one of the layers had
wheels and the other one is not-movable. If somebody came to
visit us, we pulled the bed and it became 2 different places
to sleep. Of course, 2 layers means higher than the regular
beds, so I had to jump on my bed in regular time. As far as I
can remember the final change for my room was changing the
walls with new wall paper. I selected a map of somewhere as a

wall paper. Mostly what I did was, I looked and read every
single line in wallpaper while I was waiting to sleep. That
was very enjoyable for me because most people read novel
before sleep, but I read the wall before sleep.
The opposite wall has 2 windows, one of them is casement
window and the other one is fixed and have curtains. I placed
the table front of window, put books on them and I was using
sill as a shelf to put my pen holders. One more thing about my
room was the carpet. It was very old-fashion and heavy one.
(Sketch 2, pg. 10)
The room which belonged to my parents had timber furniture in
same style. There were 2 end tables next to the bed, a drawer
and a vanity stand with mirror and a TV suspended from the
wall. The master bedroom has a small restroom. The restroom
was very small and the fabricated shower tubs did not suit in
it. In order to solve the shower problem, my father used
translucent glass and divided the spaces into two parts by
giving proper slope. Since we did not any space for clothes to
dry, we had spool system outside of the window.
Another room was my sister and brothers room. It has built in
furniture as well. The furniture had some kind of table,
shelves and drawers. We used it to put the printers,
computers, some school stuffs, books and etc. There were 2
different bed in the room but because of the irregular shape
5. 6.
of the room, they placed like “L” shaped, that is the reason
why the door cannot close.
For the fourth room, there was a TV, a table and “L” shaped
seating place with armchairs. This room mostly used by my
brother to study. Other than that my mom used to watch the TV.
It had blue color schemes and very made us feel very relaxing
because of the emptiness. Even the lighting fixture was not
suspended made the space more spacious.
When you enter the house, first thing that you came across is
the kitchen. It has counters in everywhere and huge white
refrigerator. On the top of the refrigerator there was one
radiator and TV. Since we did not have any other space, we put
the dining table in the middle of the room. The material used
for the dining table was steel footings and glass plane. It
made the kitchen smaller and two people cannot pass directly.
Natural gas pipes looked very disgusting even they are at the
back of the door. The covers for the counters were blue but
the horizontal plane of the place was marble.
As a final for interior of the house, the living room plays
significant role. It has fireplace in the corner. On top pf
the fireplace, my father placed some armament such as knifes,
rifles, guns, swords, seem like a walking stick but inside the
sword, arches and so on. (Photograph 1, pg. 11) Actually, he
is addicted to any kind of armaments and wants to show what he

has. Then, we had a huge, heavy table which is almost not used
because it was for the guests. Next to the dining place, the
seating unit placed with triple seat, double seat and 2
armchairs. We had huge TV (the height of the TV was over me),
and a coffee table in the middle of the seating. Since my
father used the living room in every time, he put his computer
on coffee table and brought closer to the double seat. While
he was lying on the double seat (he placed his legs on the arm
of the seat), he used his computer. (Photograph 2, pg. 11)
We lived in an apartment where all our neighbors are my
uncles, aunts, cousins, my grandfather and grandmother. (Aile
Apartmanı!) That is the reason why the relationship between
the houses was very close. We celebrated birthdays together;
my father visited his parents in every night, we went to
garden to made a picnic for my cousins (mostly what we did was
putting water on the soil and made “çamurdan köfte” and throw
each other) and so on. The garden has some plants such as
“karalahana” which is very important for the families come
from Black Sea region –I am from Trabzon- and grapes which
smells very good and some roses in different colors. We had
only 4 trees which are pines. The four trees placed like a
square shaped and the one which is near to the door of garden
had a bird nest.
We did not have well- organized sidewalks in neighborhood
because almost none of the apartments have a parking place.

Howeveri our apartment had parking places, but still it is not
safe for the children to play on the streets. Next to our
apartment, there is a primary school which name is Hüseyin
Hüsnü Tekışık İlköğretim Okulu. It is the place where I went
for the primary school. Since the school and my home next to
each other, I came home in lunch time and did not waste any
time in the road of the school-home. (Google Maps views, pg.
12)
For the answer of the 3 questions I would like to add some
comments about the house. The apartment-flat did not affect me
either positive way or negative way when I was at that house.
However, compared to the house that I live today, I can say
that the old-house has negative impact on not only me but also
my family. For example, the daylight has a huge impact on
everyone. We felt the tiredness in the house because of light.
Also, the ceiling height is not very high, which also bother
us. For the structure of the house one more thing is crucial
which built-in furniture with lack of organization. Since they
cannot move one place to another all the furniture was no
other option to place. Actually, it is not good in terms of
human comfort because people want to change the places of the
furniture whenever they want. For the emotional way
(relationship between neighbors), it was very hard because
everyone knows each other. Especially, my grandparents follow
8. 9.
us on the cameras. It made a pressure on us. Also, people were
disturbing inappropriate times.
Considering the screenwriting, location has a huge role as
well. For example, the old-house shaped the way I study or it
shaped the way my mom cooks. She is still using a small place
in the kitchen or my father is still lying on a double seat
but there are 2 triple seats in living room. Thus, the
location did not only a place where people live and behave
accordingly. It is the place where people gain the habits.
Each and every character in daily life have different habits,
behaviors and it belongs only themselves not like anyone.
These make the characters more unique and different.
