The Senior Learning Network is keeping learning alive for seniors by bringing live interactive programming to senior centers, libraries, community centers, etc.
2. What is the Senior Learning
Network?
SLN is dedicated to lifelong learning
through videoconferencing to connect
senior centers, community centers,
libraries, and schools to each other and
nonprofit organizations such as museums .
3. Need
During the baby boomer years, 1946-1964
(inclusive), 77.3 million Americans were born.
4. Beginning January 1st, 2011 every single day more than
10,000 Baby Boomers will reach the age of 65. That is
going to keep happening every single day for the next 19
years.
Life expectancy has risen to 78 years
This group of seniors makes up a highly-educated and
independent group of people.
6. Brain Research
The medical evidence shows that an older brain is every bit as
capable as a younger brain when it comes to making new
connections between nerve cells.
The connections between neurons, called dendrites are made at
the same rate in older adults (aged 55+), then in younger adults
(aged 20-30).
The collective body of research clearly shows that creativity and
learning has life-long potential and should be considered
essential along with other services provided to older adults.
