First Fleet in 1788. Five Indian cows and two
bulls were purchased at Cape Town. These
cows were not to be eaten but to be used for
transporting goods and breeding. The cows
soon ran away and were found about seven

1820, there were about 54 000 cows in
Australia, the largest herds owned by John
Macarthur and Reverend Samuel Marsden. By
1840 there were over 300 000 cattle.
