Abstract
• The development of micro-electronics technology, computing
technology and the wireless communications technology, wireless
sensor networks (WSNs) has been great concerned in recent years.
• The architecture of WSN directly affect entire network performance,
and the network performance affects the availability of WSN.
• The design of WSN architecture need consider many aspects, such as
deploy, energy consumption, expansibility, flexibility and error
tolerance.
• The cross-layer MAC protocol can be designed to reduce energy
consumption and prolong the network lifetime.

1 modern sensor technology

3 wireless communication technology
4 embedded computing and distributed processing technology
WSNs is composed by a large amount of micro sensor nodes
distributed in monitored area
purpose of building WSN
• to collaboratively sense
• collect and process the information of the objects detected in the
monitored area and
• then sends it to the observer [2].

Structure of sensor node
The sensor node is composed of four parts:
1 sensor module
2 processor module
3 wireless communication module and
4 power supply module, as shown in Figure 2

The main function of network layer
• The network layer supplies two function management services:
network layer data service and network layer management service.
1 Produce package of internet layer;
2 Routing of the network topology;
3 Configure new device parameters;
4 Establish the PAN network; (5) Access or break PAN network;
5 Allocate network address;
6 Discover and maintain the network neighbor information;
7 Supply routing, control the reception time and state of the receptor.

CROSS-LAYER MAC PROTOCOL OF WSNS
• In data receiving and dispatching, the sensor nodes have four states:
1 dormancy
2 monitoring
3 receiving and sending
4 the energy consumption of sending and receiving is maximum.
• In design of communication protocol, as an important infrastructure
of WSNs stacks.
• the MAC protocol determines the use-pattern of wireless channel,
allots wireless communication resource for sensor nodes, directly
influences the overall network performance, and becomes top priority
of WSNs research.

Conclusion
• WSNs have a very wide range of applications.
• With the gradual resolution of a series of key technologies, WSNs will
be a very large all-pervasive network in the future.
• According to the characteristics of WSNs, the major challenges in the
future appear in five aspects that include
1 lower energy consumption
2 real-time
3 low cost
4 security
5 anti-jamming and cooperation.
• The design of every layer is mutually independent, so it is limited,
then the optimization design of every layer could not guarantee
optimal design of the entire network.
