A Virtual Field Lesson in Partnership with the Delta Sculling Center

Learning Objectives:
● Students will learn ​about the Delta Sculling Center, a Stockton based organization that
provides access to fitness, and recreation through the sport of sculling ( rowing with two
oars)
● Students will learn about the benefits of sculling on the mind and body.

● Graphic Organizer Worksheet

Vocabulary Covered in Lesson:
● Oar - A pole with a flat head that is used to steer a boat
● Scull- A boat used in the sport of sculling
● Sculling - A sport that involves moving a boat with two oars
Anticipated Misconceptions:
● Sculling is a one person sport.
● Depending on experience with computers, students may struggle to copy and paste images
into the graphic organizer. ( May need to show students how to use Ctrl ‘C’ to copy and Ctrl ‘V’
to paste)

What is Sculling?”
● ( 1 minutes) Students watch​ video​ of athlete
sculling
● ( 2 minutes) Students will record their
observations after watching the video (if using
Nearpod, use the “Collaborate” Feature)
● ( 1 minute) Students take turns reading the
slide “ Sculling is….”
● (2 minutes) Teacher plays Intro​ video from the
Delta Sculling Center
● ( 5 minutes) Students take turns reading slides:
o Why Scull ?
o Find your place at the Delta Sculling
Center
o Sculling is a great form of exercise
Introduction of New
Material - Exercise and the
Body
7 minutes ● (2 minutes) Teacher reads slide that introduces
students to the exercise of ‘ Scullers’
● ( 2 minutes) Teacher plays the exercise​ video of
‘Scullers’
● ( 3 minutes) Teacher and students do “Scullers
together”.
Hands on Activity 25 minutes ● Teacher directs students to open the ​graphic
organizer worksheet​ ( shared with students in
Nearpod)
● Teacher direct students to
○ Make a copy of the doc
○ Rename with ​First Last Name _Exercise
○ Share with teacher
● Teacher shows students the ​exemplar graphic
organizer worksheet.
● Teacher directs students to find images using
Google’s safe search. If your school’s network
settings prohibit students from searching for
images, the teacher should pre populate a
google doc with various images for students to
use as a resource.
Closing 4 minutes ● (4 minutes) Teacher selects 2 students to share
their graphic organizers.
Assessment 9 minutes ● (1 minute) Teacher introduces the writing
