This document summarizes the results of a sustainability survey completed by leaders from several Minnesota and Iowa synods. 35 surveys were returned. The majority of respondents felt that providing practical help for congregations facing sustainability issues was important and urgent. Common challenges identified were a focus on buildings/attendance over mission, reluctance to change, and lack of energy for new ideas. Suggested approaches included guided conversations, asset mapping, sharing stories, prayer, and empowering lay leadership. Respondents agreed to participate in further online discussions to develop strategies and resources.

Hello, I'm pastor Peter Soli. In collaboration with the Southeast Minnesota Synod and Rev. Dr. Mark Yakel-Juleen I have launched a Grassroots Ministry Sustainability Project with a survey. Church leaders from 15 Midwest synod and parish pastors from the Southeast MN Synod were invited to offer their experience, thoughts, and ideas around the challenges of sustaining the life and vitality of ministry, especially in small congregations.
-- Discover alternative models and strategies for sustainable, vital ministry with small congregations.
-- Develop tools and resources for helping congregations and pastoral leaders who find themselves at a critical tipping point in their ministries.
-- Find direction and discern the best and helpful ways to strengthen the partnership between synods and small congregations struggling with sustainability issues.
A focus on sustainability is especially important and valuable at this time. The Covid 19 pandemic has put additional stress on congregations and is pushing some to a tipping point. Working together we can discern God's will and transition to a new beginning.
