Learning Objectives:
● Students will learn ​about the Hatch workshop, a Stockton based organization that offers
education and training in fine crafts and design.
● Students will learn about​ 3D Printing - How it works and how it can be used to make our world
better.

● Nearpod Lesson
● www.makers.leopoly.com​ ( students will access this website through Nearpod )
Vocabulary Covered in Lesson:
● 3D shape – A solid shape with thickness
● 2D shape – A flat shape with no thickness
● Prosthetic – An artificial body part that someone wears
Anticipated Misconceptions:
● Students may think that a drawing of a 3D shape is 2 dimensional
Total Time : 60 minutes
Lesson Part Time Teacher/Student Actions
Introduction 6 minutes ● ( 1 minutes) Teacher introduces the “Learning
Objectives” and agenda.
● ( 2 minutes) Teacher plays video from ​Hatch
Workshop​.
● ( 3 minutes) Teacher directs students to
explore the Hatch workshop using the ​“Virtual
Tour”​ feature.
Introduction of New Material -
3D versus 2D
15 minutes ● ( 1 minute) Students take turns reading - Go
over slide that explains the difference

2. between shapes 2D and 3D shapes
○ 2D shapes are flat shapes with sides,
that have no thickness and that 3D
shapes are solid shapes that have
thickness.
● ( 1 minute) Teacher models for students how
to draw a 2D shape.
● ( 2 minutes) Students draw a 2D shape (can
use the “Draw It’ feature in Nearpod)
● ( 1 minute) Teacher grabs a 3D object from
home and names that object is 3D because it
is solid and has thickness.
● ( 7 minutes) Students go grab a 3D object
from their homes and take turns sharing with
their peers.
○ Discussion Questions after students
have brought back their items:
■ What object did you grab?
■ How do you know that your
object is a 3D shape? ( Students
should say “ I know my object is
a 3D shape because it is solid
and has thickness)
● ( 3 minutes) Students identify 2D shapes and
3D shapes (use the “Draw It” feature in
Nearpod to circle the 3D shapes in red, and to
circle the 2D shapes in blue)
Introduction of New Material -
3D Printers
14 minutes ● ( 3 minutes) Teacher will play the ​Nat Geo Kids
video​ which explains how 3D printers work
● ( 4 minutes) Students will answer the question
“ ​If you had a 3D printer, what would you
print?” (can ​use the “collaborate board”
feature in Nearpod to answer the question)
● ( 2 minutes) Students take turn reading - Go
over slide introducing the vocabulary
prosthetic
● ( 4 minutes) Teacher​ will play video that
explains how 3D printers​ can be used to
create prosthetics
● ( 1 minute) Students take turns reading - Go
over slides that summarizes uses for 3D
printers ( Education, Fashion, Technology,
Medical) .

Assessment 10 minutes ● ( 1 minute) Teacher introduces the writing
prompt, ​- What is a 3D Printer ?
● Describe one way you could use a 3D printer
to help another person.
● ( 3 minutes) Students use the “collaborate
feature” to recall information/brainstorm with
their peers before writing
● ( 6 minutes) Students write a response to the
following prompt, ​“Imagine you have a 3D
printer. Describe a way you could use the 3D
printer to help another person.” (​can use the
“Open Response” feature in Nearpod)
Leopoly Makers
Explore Activity
17 minutes This is meant to be an explore activity where
students can try out different editing tools on the
Leopoly Makers website. It is recommended that
teachers familiarize themselves with the website
ahead of teaching this lesson.
Teacher should direct students to
1. Navigate to ​makers.leopoly.com​ ( the Nearpod
will automatically take students to website so
they don’t have to enter this URL)
2. Scroll down until you see “Browse Library”
3. Click “ Go”
4. Select a 3D object
5. Click “ Edit”
6. Explore the different tools for editing your
shape.
Closing 3 Minutes Teacher reads over the slide with contact
information for Hatch.
