âA more human LinkedInâ: Spain media project helping Covid jobless
Level: Elementary
Sam Jones
15 September, 2021
Covid changed Alejandroâs* life. Alejandro,
a widowed craftsman, lost his business that
sold leather to shops, markets and the military.
He used all his savings, his father died from
coronavirus, he had no electricity, and he got
food for himself and his teenage daughter from
a food bank.
âSometimes I didnât eat so that I could feed
my daughter. I used to lie and tell her I wasnât
hungry. I lost 12 kilos through worry, not eating
and not sleeping.â
Alejandro started begging outside a Madrid
supermarket just to survive.
A family at the supermarket told him about
Un Mismo Equipo (One Team), an Instagram
account and website where unemployed and
homeless people can advertise their skills.
A company that makes luxury motorbike
seats saw Alejandroâs profile on Un Mismo
Equipo and offered him a job at their factory in
northern Spain.
Un Mismo Equipo began when Gonzalo
Peralesâ friend sent him a photo of a man on a
street in Madrid. The man, an electrician, had a
cardboard sign asking for work.
Perales posted the picture on his Instagram
account. Within an hour, the man got a job
offer. The next day, Perales met another man
on the streets of Madrid who was looking for
work as a waiter. He uploaded his story and,
within 48 hours, the man got 15 job offers.
Perales saw that many of the people who lost
their jobs because of the pandemic were in
their 40s and 50s. They had worked for many
years but they couldnât find work because they
did not know how to look for jobs online.
âToday, you need a computer and computer
skills to get a job,â says Perales.
The idea of Un Mismo Equipo is simple: people
make contact via Instagram or the website and
Perales sends them a questionnaire to fill in.
After that, he chats to them and uploads their
profiles for employers to read.

âItâs like a more human kind of LinkedIn,â he
says. âWe tell peopleâs stories in a nice way so
that others can empathise with them. A lot of
the people we work with are in their 50s. They
have worked for 30 years and they have a lot of
experience. That can really help companies.â
Thanks to their mobile phones and free wifi in
cafes, many people contact Un Mismo Equipo
every day.
âWe hope soon to help 1,000 people a year
instead of 100,â he says. In the last months the
project helped get 13 people jobs across Spain.
Alejandro is very happy to be working again.
Soon his daughter can stop living with relatives
in Madrid and join him in the north.
*Alejandro is not his real name.

3. Find the information
a. With a partner, students read the sentences
and choose the right word in italics to make the
sentences true according to the article. They should
cross out the two words they do not need in each
sentence and then check their answers by reading
the relevant parts again in the article.
Key:
1. leather
2. father
3. banks
4. lost
5. skills
6. factory
7. unemployed
8. skills
9. experience
10. nice
4. Key language
a. In this task, students find, understand, and use the
phrase âI used to âŚâ
b. Students choose the correct answer: âsomething you
often did in the past, but not nowâ. Emphasise that
the structure used+to+do is never used for present
habits, only for the past.
c. To make this more communicative, you could
ask students to write their three sentences about
themselves on a piece of paper, and then collect and
redistribute the papers. Students should read out the
three sentences on their new piece of paper and try
to guess who wrote them. If students need ideas,
suggest that they can write about their childhood
routines, or what they used to do in their previous
job, but donât do now, e.g.: âI used to get up at 7am
to go to schoolâ, or âI used to write long reports in my
previous jobâ.
5. Discussion
a. Students discuss the questions directly connected to
the article.
1. Warmer
a. Students work in pairs and decide where people are
most likely to go to first to look for a new job these
days. They should write a number in each box with 1
being the most likely place and 6 the least likely. Ask
for feedback â maybe by a show of hands â so that
they can compare their answers with those of the
other students.
2. Key words
a. Students write the words from the wordpools next
to the definitions on the lines provided. Then they
should find and highlight them in the article to read
them in context.
Key:
1. widowed
2. savings
3. lie
4. begging
5. survive
6. advertise
7. skills
8. profile
9. offers
10. empathize
b. Before reading the article carefully, students

sentences to ensure that they understand and know
how the words are used in other contexts.
Key:
1. lie
2. offers
3. skills
4. savings
5. empathize

6. In your own words
a. Students complete the text with information about
themselves with particular emphasis on their skills.
Alternatively, or as a part 2 to the task, they think of
questions they need to interview a partner and write
about their partnerâs work and skills. E.g.:
⢠Whatâs your name?
⢠What job did you train to do?
⢠How long did you work / have you worked in
this job?
⢠What are your skills / What are you good at?
