Social media applications for Restaurants

Introduction
•   Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in
    which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in
    virtual communities and networks

However

•   Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining website
    traffic or attention through social media sites.

•   social media marketing is taking over as organisations have begun
    to utilize this by using social networking websites as a marketing
    tool as part of their process for enhancing their business.

•   Social media has become a permanent fixture within the marketing
    world in particular restaurants, it is not a substitution for
    conventional marketing, merely one more utensil in the marketing
    toolbox.
Social Media Sites
•   Facebook and Twitter are the most recognised social sites for most marketing and
    promotional purposes there are many other alternatives that have beneficial factors to
    encourage customers to choose their restaurant over there competitors. We have
    evaluated a select few that are considered to be appropriate for Yield Management within
    restaurants.

•   Social media sites are easily associated by logos used by the sites this strategy is also
    used within restaurants to establish a brand name.

•   Social media applications

Age Demographics and
        Social Media
 The population by age appears to be a demographically small age group to
 focus on however the percentile of 18 to 24 year olds with social media
 applications is large in contrast to the population. 98% of this age group
 already use social media applications.

                                       restaurants more frequently than
                                       other age groups




Due to the demographics of the social media usage fast food restaurant
McDonalds will be focused upon with relation with this age group.

                   These age demographics show that the age range
            12.7   we have chosen 18-24 comes in at the second

              %    highest percentile for people that eat at McDonalds.
                   however this is the age range we chose to target as
            12.7   the majority of social media sites have restriction for
7   55-64
              %    age to be 18 or over therefore it would not be fair to
                   include this age group.

       McDonalds Restaurant
•   According to the McDonald's Corporation website (as of June
    2012), McDonald's has, "More than 33,000 restaurants around the
    world in 118 countries

•   Operating in over 100 countries.

•   Within the UK, there are approximately 1200 restaurants,

•   Around 600 are franchises. There are approximately 85,000
    people employed by McDonald's UK and over 1 million worldwide.
Social Media Sites
•    Six social media sites will be evaluated

These will be

1.   Yelp

2.   Foursquare

3.   Google+

4.   Pinterest

5.   LinkedIn

6.   Upcoming.org

•    Three social media sites will be recommended for implementation to enhance
     McDonalds restaurant yield management and to improve knowledge of the company.
Foursquare.
•   Foursquare is the prominent locality cantered social network site that offers an
    overabundance of openings and opportunities for restaurants in this instance
    both immense and minor in size.

•   People use Foursquare to check into locations they’ve visited by using the app
    on their mobile phones. Once they’ve checked into a location, it can be shared
    with their foursquare friends and other social sites that are connected with the
    Foursquare account.

•   Over 3 billion check-ins, with millions more every day

•   Have access to deals at 18,000 restaurants nationwide in various locations

•   • Foursquare reaches a worldwide audience of over 30 million people having
    maximum impact on marketing and promoting the restaurant on the world wide
    web
Google+
Google+ is a social networking application that was designed to show
the way people interact offline more closely than is the case in other
social networking services “Real-life sharing rethought for the web.”

The main features of Google+ are:

-   Instant upload is an option to automatically send pictures and videos
    taken with a mobile phone

-   Streams which bring news updates fast

-   Sparks are topics that you want to discuss with others
Yelp
Yelp is a local directory service with social networking that allows user
reviews and with over 100 million viewers it would be a bad move for a
restaurants not willing to promote there restaurant on Yelp.

Features of yelp

•   It can be used as a search engine for many different categories which
    includes reviews, ratings, pictures to influence viewers to go there.

•   However reviews or ratings may influence what the viewer will do, for
    example, if a restaurant has a negative mage viewer are less likely to
    visit the restaurant.
Pinterest

•   Pinterest is a social media website that allows users to organise
    and share images and videos from around the web and manage
    theme-based image collections

Their main features include:

-   Allowing users to post photos of their favourite hobbies, places etc
    and group them into categories

-   Allows other users to share your interests and gives them a chance
    to experience them themselves
Upcoming

•   Upcoming is a social event calendar and social networking website
    that was founded in 2003.

•   Features

Their main features include:

-   Provides information of upcoming events

-   Advertises new promotions

-   Allows friends to interact and share where they are and what they
    are doing
LinkedIn

•   LinkedIn is a social networking site that is specifically for the
    business community which allows professional networking between
    businesses.

Their Main Features include:

•   Allowing businesses to see what their competitors are promoting
    and currently offering

•   It allows users to post and view photos

•   It allows users to ask questions regarding businesses and gain
    and information on their queries
Recommendations
    Foursquare
•   Enhancement through use to McDonalds restaurant

•    This is where restaurants are on foursquare have the advantage
    from being on the podium as users’ friends see where they’re
    checking in to eat could conceivably influence them to do the same
    based on the endorsements.

•   Can increase sales an improve yield management through the use
    of the check in application.

•   We have chosen foursquare as one of the recommendations
    because restaurants will benefit highly from their customers using
    this and then having their friends know about it and come as well
    which increases the restaurants clientele.

•   As it is a widely used application news travels fast therefore if a
    restaurant were to use this they could send news of any
    promotions, deals etc. that they have on

•   Google+ gives restaurants the ability to promote their services by
    uploading videos and pictures

Yelp
•   customers don’t know what to expect. By doing a little research on
    Yelp as it is a review site, people can feel more comfortable
    knowing the restaurant they choose is highly rated.

•   Yelp serves as a form of advertising to benefit food establishments
    that have massive chains but also for restaurants that are not well-
    known McDonalds is one of the worlds largest fast food restaurant
    chains.

•   We have chosen to recommend this as if a restaurant gains a high
    review from customers on being influenced from reading reviews
    from others on this then this knowledge will be seen by everyone
    else and give the restaurant a better reputation.

Introduction • Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks However • Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites. • social media marketing is taking over as organisations have begun to utilize this by using social networking websites as a marketing tool as part of their process for enhancing their business. • Social media has become a permanent fixture within the marketing world in particular restaurants, it is not a substitution for conventional marketing, merely one more utensil in the marketing toolbox.
  • 4. Social Media Sites • Facebook and Twitter are the most recognised social sites for most marketing and promotional purposes there are many other alternatives that have beneficial factors to encourage customers to choose their restaurant over there competitors. We have evaluated a select few that are considered to be appropriate for Yield Management within restaurants. • Social media sites are easily associated by logos used by the sites this strategy is also used within restaurants to establish a brand name. • Social media applications YouTube Google + Yelp Foresquare Pintrest My Space Cafemom LinkedIn Flickr

Age Demographics and Social Media The population by age appears to be a demographically small age group to focus on however the percentile of 18 to 24 year olds with social media applications is large in contrast to the population. 98% of this age group already use social media applications. 18 to 24-year-olds eat out in restaurants more frequently than other age groups Due to the demographics of the social media usage fast food restaurant McDonalds will be focused upon with relation with this age group.

McDonalds Age Demographics 16.0 2 18-24 % 14.9 3 25-34 % 14.2 4 35-44 % 13.3 5 45-54 % These age demographics show that the age range 12.7 we have chosen 18-24 comes in at the second 6 65+ % highest percentile for people that eat at McDonalds. however this is the age range we chose to target as 12.7 the majority of social media sites have restriction for 7 55-64 % age to be 18 or over therefore it would not be fair to include this age group.

Demographics of McDonalds Restaurant • According to the McDonald's Corporation website (as of June 2012), McDonald's has, "More than 33,000 restaurants around the world in 118 countries • Operating in over 100 countries. • Within the UK, there are approximately 1200 restaurants, • Around 600 are franchises. There are approximately 85,000 people employed by McDonald's UK and over 1 million worldwide.
  • 8. Social Media Sites • Six social media sites will be evaluated These will be 1. Yelp 2. Foursquare 3. Google+ 4. Pinterest 5. LinkedIn 6. Upcoming.org • Three social media sites will be recommended for implementation to enhance McDonalds restaurant yield management and to improve knowledge of the company.

Foursquare. • Foursquare is the prominent locality cantered social network site that offers an overabundance of openings and opportunities for restaurants in this instance both immense and minor in size. • People use Foursquare to check into locations they’ve visited by using the app on their mobile phones. Once they’ve checked into a location, it can be shared with their foursquare friends and other social sites that are connected with the Foursquare account. Features Of Foursquare • Over 3 billion check-ins, with millions more every day • Have access to deals at 18,000 restaurants nationwide in various locations • • Foursquare reaches a worldwide audience of over 30 million people having maximum impact on marketing and promoting the restaurant on the world wide web

Google+ Google+ is a social networking application that was designed to show the way people interact offline more closely than is the case in other social networking services “Real-life sharing rethought for the web.” The main features of Google+ are: - Instant upload is an option to automatically send pictures and videos taken with a mobile phone - Streams which bring news updates fast - Sparks are topics that you want to discuss with others

Yelp Yelp is a local directory service with social networking that allows user reviews and with over 100 million viewers it would be a bad move for a restaurants not willing to promote there restaurant on Yelp. Features of yelp • It can be used as a search engine for many different categories which includes reviews, ratings, pictures to influence viewers to go there. • However reviews or ratings may influence what the viewer will do, for example, if a restaurant has a negative mage viewer are less likely to visit the restaurant.

Pinterest • Pinterest is a social media website that allows users to organise and share images and videos from around the web and manage theme-based image collections Their main features include: - Allowing users to post photos of their favourite hobbies, places etc and group them into categories - Allows other users to share your interests and gives them a chance to experience them themselves
  • 13. Upcoming • Upcoming is a social event calendar and social networking website that was founded in 2003. • Features Their main features include: - Provides information of upcoming events - Advertises new promotions - Allows friends to interact and share where they are and what they are doing
  • 14. LinkedIn • LinkedIn is a social networking site that is specifically for the business community which allows professional networking between businesses. Their Main Features include: • Allowing businesses to see what their competitors are promoting and currently offering • It allows users to post and view photos • It allows users to ask questions regarding businesses and gain and information on their queries
  • 15. Recommendations Foursquare • Enhancement through use to McDonalds restaurant • This is where restaurants are on foursquare have the advantage from being on the podium as users’ friends see where they’re checking in to eat could conceivably influence them to do the same based on the endorsements. • Can increase sales an improve yield management through the use of the check in application. • We have chosen foursquare as one of the recommendations because restaurants will benefit highly from their customers using this and then having their friends know about it and come as well which increases the restaurants clientele.
  • 16. Recommendations Google+ • As it is a widely used application news travels fast therefore if a restaurant were to use this they could send news of any promotions, deals etc. that they have on • Google+ gives restaurants the ability to promote their services by uploading videos and pictures
  • 17. Recommendations Yelp • customers don’t know what to expect. By doing a little research on Yelp as it is a review site, people can feel more comfortable knowing the restaurant they choose is highly rated. • Yelp serves as a form of advertising to benefit food establishments that have massive chains but also for restaurants that are not well- known McDonalds is one of the worlds largest fast food restaurant chains. • We have chosen to recommend this as if a restaurant gains a high review from customers on being influenced from reading reviews from others on this then this knowledge will be seen by everyone else and give the restaurant a better reputation.
