Godwin’s Authorities

  Authorities

•Judgment
•Coercion
•Confidence
Godwin Describes Judgment
• “one of the purest kind of obedience,
where an action flows from the
  independent conviction of our private
judgment, where we are directed, not by
the precarious and mutable interference of
another but by a recollection of the
  intrinsic and mutable interference with
another, but by a recollection of the
intrinsic and indefeasible tendency of the
action to be performed” (Godwin 119).
• In this kind of obedience, the action is
based upon our understanding of the need
for, or the rightness of the action and not
based upon the approval of others in the
  community.
Godwin Describes Coercion
• “Where a man, in issuing his percept, does not deliver that
which may be neglected with impunity; but his requisition
is attended with a sanction, and the violation of it will be
followed with a penalty” (Godwin 120).
• What I believe this means is any human being does not
show their potential work until they know and discover the
consequences of the punishment, and until they also learn
that it is a dishonor to get a punishment, so therefore
people must show fear and show their full potential work.
He describes it as one of the strict ways of forcing
obedience due to the fact that one may be severely
punished if one does not do what one is told to do (Godwin
  120).
• In this kind of obedience one fears the punishment if one
does not comply, but if one does comply, the reward may
  be big.
Godwin Describes Confidence
• “the reposing of
  confidence,” in others
  who have superior
  knowledge, skills,
  expertise in some field
  than in oneself so that
  the final outcome is
  more fit and beneficial
  (Godwin 119).
Ferire’s Concepts

      Concepts

•Banking Concept
•Problem-Posing
•
                          Banking Concept
“Education thus becomes an act of
depositing, in which the students are the
depositories and the teacher is the
    depositor. Instead of communicating, the
    teacher issues communiqués and makes
    deposits which the students patiently
receive, memorize, and repeat” (Freire 1).
• The author is trying to explain that the
student has to receive information from
the teacher so the student has to put the
information that the teacher teaches into
their head. The second step is when the
student has to take the information and
    then memorize the information the
    student tried to store.
• And finally the last step is when the
student has to withdraw the information
when the student is being asked a
question based on that topic or when the
student is quizzed on. The author believes
that these steps are followed throughout
our daily lives in order to function in a
    society.
Problem-posing
• “They must abandon the
  educational goal of deposit-
  making and replace it with
  the posing of the problems
  of human beings in their
  relations with the world”
  (Ferire 6).
• He is trying to convey that if
one has to look at the idea
  of problem posing, one will
have to drop the idea of the
  banking concept, because in
this case one is looking for
  the errors in people.
Connecting Godwin to Freire
Problem Solving
• How is this related to Conviction and
  Confidence?

Banking Concept
• How is this related to Confidence and
  coercion?
Problem Solving and Conviction

How they are related
• Problem posing makes one be
  engaged with real life problems
  and based on conviction, “Private
Judgment” one has to make the
  sole decision by themselves to
solve the problem in this case.
• One has to understand and think
about the problem that they have
and based on their own previous
  experiences of a similar problem
they are solving it by themselves
  with no other help.
Problem Solving and Confidence
How are they related
• Another way one may approach this
is when one has a actual problem,
one may seek help from others just
to make sure that their solving
method will have a better chance of
  working and boost their confidence
of trying to achieve that goal
• Also one may not succeed the first
time but one may always come back
and involve many people to seek
out knowledge that agree with one
another to give them a better
  chance of succeeding at it
Banking Concept and Confidence
How they are related
• In this case lets just say the teacher has to
prepare the students for an exam
• banking method to make sure the students
  memorize
• In this case the students have to obey her to
gain confidence for their future exams.
Banking Concept and Coercion
How they are related
• Lets just say it is a previous scenario to the
previous slide, except this times the parents
  are involved with their son/daughter
• The parents are providing the force to make
sure the student does well on their exams by
punishing them if they get a lower grade
In Conclusion
What have we learned
• both the authors, Godwin and Freire have
  both described some concepts/authorities
which both relate to one another not only in
education but also real life situations.

  • 2. Godwin’s Authorities Authorities •Judgment •Coercion •Confidence
  • 3. Godwin Describes Judgment • “one of the purest kind of obedience, where an action flows from the independent conviction of our private judgment, where we are directed, not by the precarious and mutable interference of another but by a recollection of the intrinsic and mutable interference with another, but by a recollection of the intrinsic and indefeasible tendency of the action to be performed” (Godwin 119). • In this kind of obedience, the action is based upon our understanding of the need for, or the rightness of the action and not based upon the approval of others in the community.
  • 4. Godwin Describes Coercion • “Where a man, in issuing his percept, does not deliver that which may be neglected with impunity; but his requisition is attended with a sanction, and the violation of it will be followed with a penalty” (Godwin 120). • What I believe this means is any human being does not show their potential work until they know and discover the consequences of the punishment, and until they also learn that it is a dishonor to get a punishment, so therefore people must show fear and show their full potential work. He describes it as one of the strict ways of forcing obedience due to the fact that one may be severely punished if one does not do what one is told to do (Godwin 120). • In this kind of obedience one fears the punishment if one does not comply, but if one does comply, the reward may be big.
  • 5. Godwin Describes Confidence • “the reposing of confidence,” in others who have superior knowledge, skills, expertise in some field than in oneself so that the final outcome is more fit and beneficial (Godwin 119).
  • 6. Ferire’s Concepts Concepts •Banking Concept •Problem-Posing
  • 7. Banking Concept “Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat” (Freire 1). • The author is trying to explain that the student has to receive information from the teacher so the student has to put the information that the teacher teaches into their head. The second step is when the student has to take the information and then memorize the information the student tried to store. • And finally the last step is when the student has to withdraw the information when the student is being asked a question based on that topic or when the student is quizzed on. The author believes that these steps are followed throughout our daily lives in order to function in a society.
  • 8. Problem-posing • “They must abandon the educational goal of deposit- making and replace it with the posing of the problems of human beings in their relations with the world” (Ferire 6). • He is trying to convey that if one has to look at the idea of problem posing, one will have to drop the idea of the banking concept, because in this case one is looking for the errors in people.
  • 9. Connecting Godwin to Freire Problem Solving • How is this related to Conviction and Confidence? Banking Concept • How is this related to Confidence and coercion?
  • 10. Problem Solving and Conviction How they are related • Problem posing makes one be engaged with real life problems and based on conviction, “Private Judgment” one has to make the sole decision by themselves to solve the problem in this case. • One has to understand and think about the problem that they have and based on their own previous experiences of a similar problem they are solving it by themselves with no other help.
  • 11. Problem Solving and Confidence How are they related • Another way one may approach this is when one has a actual problem, one may seek help from others just to make sure that their solving method will have a better chance of working and boost their confidence of trying to achieve that goal • Also one may not succeed the first time but one may always come back and involve many people to seek out knowledge that agree with one another to give them a better chance of succeeding at it
  • 12. Banking Concept and Confidence How they are related • In this case lets just say the teacher has to prepare the students for an exam • banking method to make sure the students memorize • In this case the students have to obey her to gain confidence for their future exams.
  • 13. Banking Concept and Coercion How they are related • Lets just say it is a previous scenario to the previous slide, except this times the parents are involved with their son/daughter • The parents are providing the force to make sure the student does well on their exams by punishing them if they get a lower grade
  • 14. In Conclusion What have we learned • both the authors, Godwin and Freire have both described some concepts/authorities which both relate to one another not only in education but also real life situations.
