11. Two opposing forces linked together:
IT in the sense of managing technology
infrastructure is on the cusp of becoming
a critical but nonstrategic asset like
electricity.

In addition IT
function assumes a
set of central roles
that have no natural
ownership
Many central roles are
now duplicated in
Finance, Procurement,
Supply Chain, and other
functions
IT “doing” roles are
being externalized
faster than other
central “doing” roles.
IT Central
Think
Do
“Thinking” and “doing”
roles require different
skills, incentives, and
business relationship.

Editor's Notes
American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation: For years, the unnecessary tests and procedures laid out by this campaign have been driving up costs and diminishing the quality of care provided to patients. In fact, according to the American College of Physicians, excessive testing costs up to $250 billion annually. A National Cancer Institute study also projects that 30,000 cancers will result from the 72 million CT scans Americans received in 2007 alone. For instance, the Journal of the American College of Radiology reported that one-third of imaging studies, like MRIs and CTs, are ordered inappropriately.
Change in global market and trend expects more from IT to provide ability to transform, build more efficiency, with speed to market. All this results in off balance between supply – demand.
Fast changing priorities, short term vs. strategic move, limited resources/budget require us to rethink
This is new normal. While this looks like a big challenge…this is unique opportunity for IT leaders to change and build partnership with their business peers. CIOs and IT leaders need to integrate with business more then ever before and…dream with business leader, needs to be catalyst for change, be an Expert on the “art of the possible” ..., Guru of risk management.
