other’s ideas as well.

  • 2. LESSON TOPIC: Stepping Up skill-building program for 6th graders. OBJECTIVES: Language: Students will be able to use language appropriate for the discussion Content: Students will be able to participate in discussions in a positive way with others to share their own ideas and build on other’s ideas as well. LEARNING STRATEGIES: I can identify behaviors involved in listening. I can identify behaviors involved in respecting other’s ideas. I can apply group communication skills I can apply empathy skills while identifying feelings. KEY VOCABULARY: Empathy, Active listening, Group communication, Huddle Up, Perspective MATERIALS: Gr 6 DVD Lesson 1, Handout 1A, Feelings Cards and Photos, Family Letter, Inspecting Your Skills homework, Chart paper
  • 3. MOTIVATION (Building background) : Set the introductory screen of the video and ask students to respond in writing whether they agree with this quote, why or why not? (1 min.) PRESENTATION: · Watch a video about the program (Video--Hopes, Plans, and Challenges 3:05 min.) · Identify our hopes, plans, and challenges for this year · Challenge our communication skills with a group activity · Identify behaviors that help and don’t help with listening to and respecting each other’s ideas. PRACTICE AND APPLICATION: Guided Practice: Class discussion: (5 min.) · What are some hopes and plans that students in the video had for their sixth grade year? ·

Group Activity (10 min.) REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT: Assessment: Group self-assessment chart EXTENSION: Talk more about listening to and respecting each other’s ideas. Try these group skills out as you do a variation of the Mix-and- Match Challenge. Practice the skills when having group discussions throughout the day.
