1. MATERNITY CARE AND
DELIVERY

2. INTRODUCTION
 The word maternity is defined as the
state of being a mother.
 Generally 3 types of services provided
during maternity care: antepartum
care, delivery, postpartum care.
 Pregnancy conformation during a
problem oriented or preventive visit is
not considered as a part of antenatal
care and should be reported using
appropriate E/M service codes

3. ANTEPARTUM CARE
 It includes initial prenatal history and
physical examination.
 Montly visit upto 28 weeks(7 visits)
 Monthly twice visit upto 36 weeks(4
visits)
 Weekly visits until delivery
 Other visits during this period is
reported separately

4. DELIVERY
 It includes admission to the hospital,
history, physical
examination,management of
uncomplicated labor,vaginal delivery
or cesrean delivery.
 Two types of delivery
1. Normal delivery
2. cesarean delivery.

5.  Medical complications of pregnancy
and medical problems complicating
labor and delivery management may
need to report separately.
 Only delivery services reported using
(59409,59514,59612,59620)
 Post delivery, and discharge services
are reported using E/M services.

6. POSTPARTUM CARE
 Upto 6 weeks it considered as
postpartum care.
 Only postpartum services reported
using 59430 including office or other
op visit following vaginal or cesarean
section delivery.
 Surgical complications of pregnacy
reported from surgery section.

7.  If only antepartum or postpartum care
is provided except delivery reported
using 59425,59426,and 59430.
 Cordocentesis — also known as
percutaneous umbilical blood
sampling (PUBS) — is a diagnostic
prenatal test in which a sample of the
baby's blood is removed from the
umbilical cord for testing.

8.  Amniocentesis (also referred to
as amniotic fluid test or AFT) is a
medical procedure used in prenatal
diagnosis of chromosomal
abnormalities and fetal infections, and
also for sex determination.
 For Repeat fetal scalp blood sampling
use 59030 using modifier 76 and 77

9.  Ectopic pregnancy embryo grows
other than uterus is known as ectopic
pregnancy.
 Episiotomy also known
as perineotomy, is a surgical incision
of the perineum and the posterior
vaginal wall.
 Cervical cerclage also known as a
cervical stitch is a treatment for
cervical incompetence or insufficiency

10.  Tocolytics are the medications used to
supress the premature labor
 Spontaneous abortion, also known as
Miscarriage the natural death of
an embryo or fetus before it is able to
survive independently
